US New Jersey Online Casinos
Worldwide famous for its boardwalk beaches and fashionable casinos of Atlantic City, New Jersey is also one of the few U.S. states with fully legalized online gambling.
Following its motto “Liberty and Prosperity”, the Garden State started its history of regulated gaming activities back in 1939 by giving the green light to pari-mutuel horse race betting. Even though classic Vegas-style entertainment had to wait almost forty more years to become an official industry, today, NJ is a great place to be for players of all styles and preferences.
The first online casinos in New Jersey opened their virtual doors in November 2013 with internet sportsbooks following suit in 2018. Other legal forms of distant gambling are horse racing, fantasy sports, and lotteries.
NJ Gaming Authorities & Regulatory Bodies
Since its establishment in 1977, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has been on a mission to maintain a legitimate and viable gambling industry, at the same time ensuring fair play and integrity of all its participants, from casino owners and operators to employees and vendors.
The Division has a wide spectrum of duties, including investigations of all license applicants, inspection, audit, and criminal and regulatory prosecution. The authority in charge of granting licenses (based on the DGE reports), which are mandatory for corporate and individual owners, managers, and employees, is the Casino Control Commission (CCC), which can deny its approval if certain individuals or entities do not meet the strict criteria of good character, honesty, and integrity.
Composed of up to three members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate, the Commission is always politically balanced – one of the requirements is that no more than two members can belong to the same political party. Commissioners are intended to serve five-year terms and can only be removed from the panel for cause.
First introduced in 1977, the Casino Control Act is still the main piece of legislation together with the CCC Rules and Regulations. Of course, the Act itself has been amended several times to keep pace with the rapidly evolving industry and better address new challenges. The Regulatory Enforcement and Regulatory Prosecutions Bureaus are the ones responsible for ensuring full compliance with respective laws, covering a broad range of segments, including rules of the games, proper advertising, underage gambling, security, and many other matters.
DGE also closely monitors the day-to-day operations of all brick-and-mortar casinos located within the state while its Technical Services Bureau (TSB) is tasked with the control of electronic gaming equipment and slot machines in the first place. Apart from conducting tests of prototype equipment, TSB also verifies jackpot payouts to players. No one-armed bandit can hit the floors of Atlantic City venues before TSB engineers evaluate its odds and fairness, and approve its use. In addition to that, gaming equipment specialists inspect all equipment during the entire time it is used or stored in NJ.
NJ Online Gambling
As already said, online gambling was legalized in New Jersey in 2013 when land-based casinos got the right to apply for respective licenses from DGE to provide online gaming services via websites and mobile devices.
To offer distant gambling, Atlantic City brick-and-mortar venues may partner with third-party providers in order to launch one or more individually branded online platforms. The latter are allowed to accept only players who are at least 21 years old and physically located in the Garden State.
Just a heads up, that does not mean someone has to live in NJ – visitors are very welcome to tap into the festive Vegas atmosphere too. The only condition is to be located within the state’s borders at the moment of placing wagers, which, of course, all licensed sites verify with the help of geolocation software.
Caesar’s, BetMGM, Borgata, and other big-name casino resorts rushed to secure their position in the newly opened market in the Fall of 2013 and attract as many patrons as possible. Today, there are more than thirty websites operated by several famous enterprises, and still counting. The Division of Gaming Enforcement constantly updates its list of licensed brands, and, of course, we keep an eye on it to provide you with up-to-the-minute information.
In accordance with the current regulations, the expenses for online business include $400,000 for obtaining a license and a $250,000 responsible gaming fee, which is paid every year. The license renewal also costs $250,000, plus there is a 15% tax on gaming revenue. In addition to that, all casinos are required to invest 2.5% of their gains into the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, which plays an important role in supporting economic and community development in Atlantic City.
NJ Online Sports Betting
Since 2018, New Jersey also has fully legalized online sports betting, with nearly twenty state-of-the-art websites accepting wagers from local players. It is worth noting that web-based sportsbooks could become a reality approximately at the same time as online casinos, but due to certain circumstances, it was not to be.
Namely, even though the state’s first bill on sports betting was approved in 2012 and enjoyed immense public support, NJ was sued by such famed professional leagues as the NBA, NFL, and NHL, to cite just some of them. Whatever the reason for such a move was, the main argument they presented was that the bill violated the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
New Jersey lost its battle in court, but in June 2017, the US Supreme Court announced its decision to hear the case, and a year later, to the huge surprise of the public, ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional as it commandeered power from the states. Finally, one year later, to the delight of millions of sports fans, Gov. Philip D. Murphy signed a bill to legalize betting and make it a reality in the Garden State.
Speaking of this milestone, Murphy then said very wise words: “It means that our casinos in Atlantic City and our racetracks throughout our state can attract new business and new fans, boosting their own long-term financial prospects. This is the right move for New Jersey and it will strengthen our economy”.
Nowadays, the state provides plenty of opportunities to bet on a broad range of different sports, including many signature events that receive a lot of attention not only in the United States but also far beyond the country’s borders.
NJ Online Casino Bonuses
Lucrative bonuses are an inseparable part of the ultimate gaming experience and often a decisive factor for players looking for the right gambling website to open an account and trust their hard-earned money with.
Punters from New Jersey are no exception, hence it comes as no surprise that NJ-licensed online casinos are ready to go the extra mile to attract new and retain existing customers. While the selection of incentives can vary from one place to another, it is not rare to spot a real ripper of a bonus such as 100% cashback or a deposit-match deal with a pure symbolic playthrough of 1x.
Naturally, at the majority of websites, new patrons are greeted with a considerable welcome offer designed to kickstart their play and help them get familiar with the place. Quite often, the sign-up perk comes in the form of a no deposit bonus, which is arguably the firmest favorite of gamblers worldwide.
In addition to that, many online casinos have well-established loyalty programs with various benefits and privileges. Borrowed from brick-and-mortar venues, such programs are usually based on the accumulation of comps by making real-money stakes to later exchange them for cash or bonuses. High-rollers, however, are often treated to truly exclusive real-life perks such as limousine rides, weekend stays at the resort, or even exotic holidays in some faraway destinations.
NJ Online Casino Games
It’s safe to say, players in New Jersey are spoiled for choice in terms of casino games, given that the world’s leading software providers compete against each other and time to introduce their titles to the local audience.
From industry giant Evolution who already has two live studios in NJ and constantly strengthens its presence with new game launches to less known developers entering the market through strategic partnerships with the state’s operators. The full list of those who consider the Garden State a place to be would be too long to cite, all the more so new suppliers appear on the scene almost on a daily basis.
To sum up, each patron can choose their perfect fit from a plethora of differently-themed slots and immersive live dealer roulette, blackjack, or poker tables. Players who want to plunge into the authentic atmosphere of Atlantic City casinos but, at the same time, avoid the complexity of poker can enjoy a host of incredibly exciting live game shows able to deliver massive payouts.
Responsible Gambling
Healthy gambling is taken seriously in New Jersey, therefore the state’s laws provide all the necessary tools and features to help in the treatment of problem gambling and the maintenance of self-exclusion programs. DGE is always ready to accept the self-exclusion request, which can be placed on the website or by phone. Players who feel the need to do it in person can schedule an appointment.
