So, it's time for my first bet in 2012! I want to get this thread a bit better organised this year so I will set some rules. First of all I have set a bank of 100 dollars which will hopefully increase with my future winnings. Secondly I will always bet 5% of the bank, so the starting bet will be 5 dollars but the amount will increase if I get more money in the bank. The minimum bet stays at 5 dollars though.

Now here's the first bet... It's FA Cup weekend in England and quite an exciting one since we'll be having a Manchester derby so early in the competition. Manchester City will face Manchester United today (in a few hours actually) and that's the game I'll be putting my money on.

All derbies are unpredictable and this one is no exception even though Man City seem to have a slight advantage mainly because the last game between the two sides was won by the Citizens 6-1 last October. Man United will want revenge, that is certain, but I doubt they're going to get it today. I believe that Man City's explosive attacking trio (Silva, Aguero, Dzeko) will do some damage again and that they will lead the home side to victory.

Yep, there's little hope left at half time as Man United are leading 3-0 and Man City are one man short. Only a miracle could rescue my bet at this point.

Since last week I went wrong with a bet on English soccer I will try again this week, also with a bet on English soccer but on a different competition: the Premier League. It's a combo bet on a total of four games, quite risky I guess but I'm fairly confident.

Chelsea FC v Sunderland - Chelsea FC to win

Chelsea is struggling at the moment with just two wins in the last six games while Sunderland have won no less than four of their last six matches. But Chelsea have won their last game, 2-1 at Wolves, and I saw real determination from the Blues in that game. That is why I believe that that are getting back on track and that they will win today.

Manchester United v Bolton Wanderers - Manchester United to win

Man United are coming from two consecutive league defeats but they got their confidence back in the FA Cup by beating arch rivals Man City and I think that they will cruise to victory against Bolton today.

Tottenham Hotspur v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Tottenham Hotspur to win

Tottenham are clear favourites for this one, they are unbeaten in the last six matches while the Wolves have not won in their last six league games.

Liverpool FC v Stoke City - Liverpool FC to win

This is a tricky one since Stoke City is probably the most surprising team in the league at the moment. But Liverpool are very strong at home and that is why I believe that they will get a win today.

I decided to go for another English Premier League bet this week, it wasn't an easy decision as the NFL Conference Championships were quite appealing as well. But since we have a cracking title battle in the Premier League today I decided to test my luck on that: Manchester City vs Tottenham.

Manchester City are top of the league table at the moment and they are in solid form at home: currently on an unbeaten streak of 20 matches in the Premier League. This run has also seen them accumulate 15 consecutive victories at Eastlands.

On the other hand Tottenham are just five points behind the Citizens in third place and have lost only once in their last nine league games away from home. Man City will miss three important players today: Yaya and Kolo Touré who are away on international duty at the African Cup and Vincent Kompany who is suspended after picking up a red card. Tottenham will have to do without Adebayor but they still have a good man upfront in Jermain Defoe.

With all those facts in mind and also with a touch of biased support for Tottenham I decided to go for a double chance bet, I will win in case of a draw or if Tottenham win. Here is the betting slip from Sports Interaction:

Now this is bad luck... The game had reached the 90th minute with the score unchanged at 2-2 when Tottenham had a huge chance to take the lead but Jermain Defoe failed to push the ball into the net from a couple of yards. Then, when there were just 20 seconds left in added time, the referee awarded Man City a penalty kick which Mario Balotelli converted to make it 3-2... Damn, just 20 seconds...

Here we go again... Confidence is rather low after losing three straight bets and that is why I decided to go for what seems a less risky bet this time just to put an end to the bad streak. The event I chose is the Australian Open final with Novak Djokovic facing Rafael Nadal. Djokovic has won against Nadal in the last six encounters between the two and I strongly believe that he will grab his seventh win tomorrow.

Thanks Blue. It's not entirely safe because Nadal has shown good form lately but I trust Djokovic, he battled very well yesterday against Murray.

Bad news: Nadal has just taken the first set, 7-5. Djokovic doesn't seem to be at his best following the exhausting semi final against Murray but I hope he will recover.

We're back in business, Nole took the second set 6-4! :) But it was quite a battle as Nadal rescued three set points...

Djokovic crushed Nadal in the third set, 6-2! We're one set away from victory! :)

Unfortunately Nadal never surrenders... The Spaniard fought on and clinched the fourth set after a nervy tie-break and pushed the game into the fifth and decisive set after around 4 and a half hours of play... Come on Nole!

It's time for this week's bet and I guess that the event that I chose can be quite obvious... You're right, it's the Super Bowl! The New York Giants face the New England Patriots tonight in Indianapolis in a rematch of the battle they had four years ago in which the Giants prevailed against the odds.

The situation is fairly similar today, the Patriots are the favourites but the Giants have shown fantastic form in the playoffs with Eli Manning throwing sensationally while protected by an awesome defence. As for the Patriots, Tom Brady is a great quarterback, no doubt about that, but he will have to face very tough opposition tonight. I think it will be a hard-fought match but my gut tells me that the New York Giants will win.
