Hermosillo, once Santisima Trinidad del Pitic and Presidio del Pitic, is found in the northwestern state of Sonora, and has 30% of its population. Begin your stay here by visiting the main square, the Plaza Zaragoza, built back in 1865. Here you can find the Palacio de Gobierno (the Government Palace), built in 1881 and the Catedral de la Asuncion, which began its construction back in the 18th century. In the square are the statues dedicated to the generals Ignacio Pesqueira and Garcia Morales, as well as gardens. To uncover a bit of regional history and culture, try one of the local museums like the Regional Museum and the Museo de Sonora. Grab the family and head over to the Centro Ecologico de Sonora, with its 200 species of animals and 300 species of plant. Everyone can enjoy the beach and its swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling over at Bahia de Kino (Kino Bay). If you like hiking and mountain climbing, there’s the Cerro de la Campana Mountain. 60 km outside of town, there’s the archaeological site La Pintada, with its caves, ancient murals and animals. Other attractions include the Museo de Sonora, the Regional Museum and the Catedral de la Asuncion.
