Once called Santisima del Pitic and Presidio del Pitic, Hermosillo is the capital of the Mexican state Sonora. It has a large manufacturing industry, primarily automobiles, and accounts for 30% of the state’s population. While the city is located in the Sonoran Desert, don’t be fooled that there aren’t green areas to explore. Also enjoyable is the Cerro de la Campana Mountain, especially if you like hiking, mountain biking and climbing. Watch for the look-out spot El Caracol. If you’re someone who prefers water over land based activities, head to Bahia de Kino (Kino Bay), where you can participate in swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and sailing. In the summer try your hand at fishing, and maybe reel in a marlin or tuna. Near the bay, you can also find the Seri Museum, designed to showcase and preserve the Seri culture and language.

For Spanish cuisine, and flamenco dancing and live music on Friday nights, there’s La Casa Grande. Looking for American fare? Try Applebee’s. For quick eats like tacos, there’s Irasema or Taco Grill. Antojeria del Centro offers Mexican fare, American classics and Italian cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

Try the local museums for a bit of history and culture, like the Museum of Sonora, a stone penitentiary built back in 1897, and the Regional Museum of Sonora’s University, with arts, crafts and even mummies. Take the kids to the local zoo, the Centro Ecologico, with its flora and fauna. Sports fans might want to visit the Hector Espino Stadium, home of the Hermosillo Naranjeros. Try hiking, biking and climbing in the Cerro de la Campana Mountain. There’s a plethora of water activities to be found at Kino Bay, like boating, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and marlin fishing. Other attractions include the Catedral de la Asuncion and the Palace de Gobierno. Also try the archaeological site La Pintada, outside the city. When the sun sets, hit up one of the local clubs like Velvet, Republic and Classico, or for beer and billiards, Biblioteca Bar and Pool. Live music is performed in Korajudaz.
