Steven Gerrard: Brendan Rodgers wants Liverpool captain to stay on

Brendan Rodgers wants Steven Gerrard to remain at Liverpool after his captain revealed he could leave in the summer having not been offered a new deal.

The 34-year-old, who is a one-club man, said this week that he would not be retiring just yet and could continue his playing career away from Anfield.

"I explained to Steven's representative that I want him to be part of what we're doing here," the Reds boss said.

"He's been a brilliant captain for me. I want to keep him here."

Rodgers added: "I relayed that information to the owners.

"I'm sure they'll go away with that and with Steven's representatives, hopefully organise a deal. He's a unique player and a unique person."

Rooney right as England captain?

BBC Radio 5 live football correspondent John Murray: "Roy Hodgson thinks Wayne Rooney has taken on the same things as Steven Gerrard did when he was captain. All being well Rooney should make that 100th appearance against Slovenia. Does Roy think that Rooney can be better? He's played so much football already in his career, but Hodgson thinks he can improve still by using that experience he's had over time."

The Sun's head of sport Shaun Custis: "Who else could Hodgson have given the captaincy to? Rooney has earned that right. The scrutiny is always on him and he has to play 50 per cent better than everyone else to get the credit. Gary Cahill is not seen as a leader, and not the right man for the job."

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "I think Wayne has looked better in a deeper role for England and Manchester United. He'll benefit from playing a Paul Scholes-esque role. That, in a way, might help his captaincy as less pressure on him to score further up the front."

I think Rooney is the obvious choice as England captain, can't see anybody else taking the armband at the moment.

A 50-yard own goal lifted Borussia Dortmund off the bottom of the Bundesliga and inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Borussia Monchengladbach.

Christoph Kramer's back pass from just inside his own half lobbed goalkeeper Yann Sommer to end Dortmund's five-match league losing streak.

The win, Dortmund's third in the league all season, moved last season's runners-up into 15th.

Monchengladbach remain third.

Kramer inexplicably lofted the ball back towards his goalkeeper with five players between him and the goal, with 32 minutes remaining.

And, with Sommer on the edge of his penalty area, the ball sailed over his head and into the back of the net for a bizarre winner.

Swansea 2-1 Arsenal: Gunners threw away game - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says it is "very disappointing to throw a game away" as they let slip a lead to lose 2-1 away against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

The visitors took the lead through Alexis Sanchez before Gylfi Sigurdsson and substitute Bafetimbi Gomis turned the game around for the Swans.

Arsenal have lost more points from a winning position than any other Premier League team this season.
