What great quarterfinal matches! Berdych finally played a high quality match. This semifinal will be great. And Fognini is having a great week, he rather routinely beat Nishikori.

Roger Federer clinched the Miami title after a fairly straightforward final against Nadal. Federer is now the oldest Miami champion ever at 35 years and 7 months and has his best season start since 2006 with 19 wins and 1 loss in 2017.

It would be great if Federer brings this confidence against Nadal to clay as well, then it will be really interesting. I can't wait to see how his backhand will work there. They are now 10-9 h2h for Federer on hard-courts, and 13-2 on clay for Nadal.
They both are back in top 5, so that is great news for Murray and Djokovic - they have a lot of points to defend from last year on clay. It will be very difficult for Murray, he better be ready, there's not many new points that he can earn till the end of the season.

It's funny how the raise in Federer's game matched perfectly the struggling in almost all the others top players form in what suppose to be a Federer's final stages of his career.
I think that just proves that the confidence is almost everything not only in tennis but in sport in general and I don't believe Federer would play with such ease if Djokovic, Murray or Nadal were on the top of their game.
Anyway I don't think Nadal is the same player any more, certainly don't show even half of his old confidence, and I won't be surprised if Federer could defeat him on a red court too.

I do agree to a certain degree. :)
Federer struggled a lot with injuries, as well. He missed the whole second half of 2016, and he withdrew from RG and a few more big tournaments. One could argue that he was fully fit only at the AO.
Of course, Nadal's, most of all fitness, is nowhere near where it was before 2012, and in patches 2013. One thing I completely agree is confidence. You have to give Federer credit for beating Nadal in the final of the AO. At that moment, there wasn't much difference between them, either in confidence or physically.
Djokovic hasn't been playing well for a long time now... and it would be interesting to see them play since their matches have always been very tough, even when Djokovic was at his best.
And Murray, I think it's more about pressure and mentally dealing with the fact that he's No. 1 than injuries, and if he can't handle it, that doesn't diminish the way Federer is playing.
and I don't believe Federer would play with such ease if Djokovic, Murray or Nadal were on the top of their game.
while that is true, it's rarely ever the case. If everyone were at the top of their games all the time, that would be quite incredible. I mean... if Djokovic had to deal with Federer, Nadal and Murray at their best all the time, + Wawrinka or del Potro, he wouldn't have the results that he has. Neither of them would.
I don't know if you watched Federer this year, but he actually improved his game. His racket has a bigger head and he feels more confident hitting that backhand now. As always, it's all about using your opportunities, and he did that perfectly.

I just saw some games here and there, not even saw a Federer entire match but I'm sure he's on top of his game maybe even better than ever - the results don't lie..usually.
My point is no matter how good he's playing I think he getting extra confidence from the fact nobody from the rest is that good at the moment.
In the early parts of his career when he was undisputed N1 in the world he had winning even the matches in which he was outplayed and then when Nadal and after that Djokovic slowly get the upper hand over him Federer barely won a match against any of them for years, even those in which he was completely equal and many times better than opponent.
So I think his confidence is over the moon now after how many, 3 straight wins against Nadal?
And about injuries, I think Federer is one of the top players with fewest bad injuries trough the course of his career, yes not so lucky lately but he barely miss a GS tournament in his career before the last season, is that due to his natural physical abilities, the way he trains or just even lucky if you will is another theme but that's the facts.

Yes this is the only way to see him win anything ;D But I now what you mean Markotik, hopefully it would work that way for him.
Yes, strange. I thought he would enter top 10 already, after the first several weeks of 2017.
Singles - First Round
[PR] T. Haas (GER) d [WC] R. Opelka (USA) 76(5) 46 63
Of course, it's not because of this win, but I've always wondered how great career he could have had. So many injuries, and pretty serious ones. And everything went downhill for him after his parents' accident. I've just found his h2h with some big names before 2002. when he got to number 2 in the world:
3–0 against Andy Roddick,
2–1 against Roger Federer,
2–1 against Marat Safin,
2–0 against Jim Courier,
5–5 against Pete Sampras.

What an entertaining final in Marrakech! Great fight from Coric to win the title. He saved four match points I think, and was a break behind in the third set. Exhausting tournament for him, but he won it.
Great draw in Monte Carlo, of course. so I guess important news is that Federer will only play RG, which only means, hopefully, fantastic summer. If the other top players get their game back, we will see how good Federer will play then.

Murray out, Wawrinka out, Thiem out, this was a pretty eventful day in Monte Carlo! Djokovic and Nadal can take advantage but only one of them can reach the final as they are both on the bottom side of the draw.

So, Nadal should win another title in Monte Carlo now that Djokovic is out as well! I doubt that any of the other three players in the semi-finals could beat Nadal on clay.

Too bad for that awful mistake.... the ball was clearly out, not even close. Cedric Mourier made such a huge mistake. After that Goffin won only one more game.
I'm not saying that Goffin would win, but at lest he would test Nadal more seriously.
That was just one point, Goffin should suck it up and be a man. It was a terrible mistake indeed but that can't be an excuse for a professional player.
