Casino Yak Chihuahua

Though not the typical Mexican getaway destination, there’s still plenty to do in this 825,000 plus city. Chihuahua is the capital of the Mexican state of the same name and focuses mostly on light industry. If you’re looking for a good starting point, try the Plaza de Armas (main square) where you can also find the Torre Legislativa de Chihuahua (the Legislative Tower of Chihuahua) It’s a good time to try some regional Mexican cuisine. Similar to Tex-Mex, Chihuahua does it norteno-style – heavy on the beef, cheese and chilli.

Gaming

For the more enthusiastic of gamblers, the lack of table games might be slightly off-putting, but they do have other offerings, such as classic and video slot machines, electronic bingo for those missing their bingo-fix, and a sportsbook where you can wager on horse-racing and sporting events. There are no hotels on site. About 3 miles from the casino you can find the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Chihuahua, located by the Fashion Mall. The offer 108 rooms and suites equipped with free internet access. Facilities on site include a business centre, fitness centre, and guests staying at the hotel can enjoy free hot breakfasts. The hotel is conveniently located near several malls and attractions, such as the Plaza del Sol shopping centre, the Convention Centre, the Exposition Centre and the Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua.

Dining

If staying at the hotel, don’t forget your free hot breakfast, or try Mi Café, serving chilaquiles montados con huevos (corn tortillas with eggs and chilli). To sample authentic Mexican cuisine try one of several venues, such as the El Quintal, near the hotel. At La Casa de los Milagros, dine in a 110 year old mansion while selecting menu items like steak, chicken and salads. They also have live music Wednesdays through Sundays after 9 pm. European-Mexican fusion is served in Botero’s. Look for menu items like seafood, steak and pasta. They also have breakfast buffets. Fine dining is found in the 19th century mansion establishment of La Casona. For Italian cuisine there’s Los Cinco Panes. For Japanese, there’s Sushi Maki.

Attractions/NightLife

For cheap beer and live music (after 9 pm) there’s Cerveceria. When you want to go dancing, try La Roca. More live tunes can be found in Cubo Bar Alive. During the day, head over to the Federal Palace of Chihuahua, former jail of Hidalgo, and now a modern art museum. Other museums in the area include the Mansion Quinta Gameros, City Museum for the Decorative Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Casa Redonda (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Casa Redonda), the Museum of the Revolution (former home of Pancho Villa), and the Museum of Religious Art (Mueso de Arte Sacro). Religious sites include the Chihuahua Cathedral, the Church of Santa Rita (city patroness), and the Templo of San Francisco, original burial site of Miguel Hidalgo. Other attractions include the Legislative Tower of Chihuahua, Mansion Quinta Carolina, Mansion Terrazas, Mansion Creel, and the City Hall of Chihuahua, with its fountains and water/light show.
