  • Oh, what a match for Halep, 15-13 in the third set. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I did not watch the match.

  • Oh, what a match for Halep, 15-13 in the third set. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I did not watch the match.

I have not watched it either because it was too late at night (or too early in the morning), but from what I have seen on the news it has been quite a battle. She rescued three match points and played for almost four hours.

Later edit: I have found a pretty extensive highlight reel of the match here:

  • Yeah I think it beat the tournament record for a longer female match ever, glad to see Halep progressed...afraid to ask but is it her's turn to win a GS title?

For sure it  wouldn't be easier when Serena returns.

Another great player without GS title is Wozniacki, so maybe one of them?

  • afraid to ask but is it her's turn to win a GS title?

I really hope so, she does deserve a GS title.

  • That first half of the draw is so tough with Kerber playing well again. For me she is the player to beat at the moment, no oscillations, very focused, quite incredible how she started this year, so irritating.

Both Halep and Wozniacki have a negative score against her, but they have not played her in 2017, so I think they both are quite capable of beating her now regardless.

  • After that tough match against Davis, Halep has raised her level significantly. This  will be a fantastic semifinal. Kerber's winning streak is just way too long, it's time to end.

  • Halep is playing really well now and she seems fresh and well-rested too, we'll have a cracking match against Kerber.

  • Whew, Simona has made it to the final after another thriller. She has to win it this time, after all she's gone through during this tournament.

  • Wow, what a match! Halep looks like a new player this year - mentally strong and courageous in key moments. Now in the final - against a marathon runner.

We saw that Wozniacki got tense and barely managed to close her match out. I wish Halep a quick recovery - only one more match to go!

  • Should be an exiting final between Halep and Wozniacki, maybe the two best players in the last decade (or even more) who didn't won a GS title.

Usually I believe man & women at the GS tourneys shouldn't be equally paid as they just not making equal efforts (with the duration of matches, sponsors,& tv interests and so on) but this time I believe women's final could bring equal if not more interest than the mens.

Halep - Kerber was a great match, maybe the best one on this years tournament.

If I had to put a money on this... it would probably be on Halep, maybe in three sets.

  • Huge congrats to Wozniacki. I'm glad that she won her first Grand Slam title, but it sucks that she had to beat Halep. It was a fantastic final till 4-3 for Halep, after that Woznicaki did what she does best, defend, and it was enough.

I have only words of praise  for Halep, and I hope that the media in Romania is not too tough on her. I know how ruthless they can be regardless of the result.

I have to add that it would be nice that for once Halep has a bit of luck in a draw. It's just ridiculous. With an exception of her first RG where she lacked experience but had relatively decent draw (not easy), these other two times, I think, it was just way too tough to keep up. That is me speaking as a fan; of course it's the most rewarding to beat all top players for the title.

  • What can I say, another heart-breaking loss for Halep.

Don't believe the media would be too harsh on her this time because she made all she could, more so playing with a cramps but it's just wasn't hers day (again).

Weirdly enough I think she played better after felt the cramps, maybe stopped worrying too much and started playing with freedom.

No doubt Woz deserved the title too, but I'm sure Halep will win a GS someday (hopefully this season) as she looks too dedicated not to succeed and as we know the first title is always the toughest, I believe she could win more than one.

They were ok this time, it's obvious to everybody that she gave 110% this time. She spent more time on court than Federer to get to the final, that is brutal by any standards!

  • After the AO, Halep announced a long break, but she was back after two weeks only, in Doha, without completely healing the foot. I hope she recovers till Indian Wells.

She has to be very careful with that, she needs longer breaks because that tendon keeps getting inflamed.

I think so too, that's why I was surprised to see her play so soon.

  • Both Serena and Azarenka played their first matches after a very long time, for different reasons, and they both looked really good on the court.

  • What a tournament for Osaka beating Sharapova, Radwanska and Pliskova in straight sets. Kasatkina is also very impressive.

  • And Osaka beat Serena! Yes, Serena is far from her best, but what impresses me the most about Osaka's game is her power and consistency.

  • Indeed, Osaka is the new rising star these days, she is playing very well lately. But I doubt she can win Miami too.

  • Yes, absolutely. Winning Double Sunshine is extremely difficult.

When I said consistency, I meant during a match. She's showing that she's capable of hitting the ball with so much power over and over again, and can keep that level throughout a match, with a very good winners/UE ratio. Considering her playing style, that's pretty great.

  • And Ostapenko is out. Kozlova beat her 75 63. That was kind of surprising, though I didn't think Ostapenko could repeat anything close to the last year's RG result.

  • Any ideas who could win RG this year?

Serena is pretty much back but I hope someone else would grab it, even afraid mentioning Halep and GS titte in the same sentence really...

  • Halep was very impressive today, I hope I won't bring the curse to her but...I really believe she could do it this time...fingers crossed for her.

  • I agree, sharpe. And even though Halep again had a very tough draw, her matches were nowhere nearly as long and exhausting as before. So, I'm sure that physically she will be ready for the final.

And Stephens.... she came out of nowhere again playing incredible. But the only decent clay-court player that she had to play against was Kasatkina, who still has a lot of ups and downs - and on that day she was off.

I will say it now... I'm sure that Halep learned her lessons from the past, and she's mentally a different player this year, and she's a clay court specialist - she will make Stephens feel uncomfortable. Halep is my favorite. Good luck.

    O:-)

You was quite right mate, she's definitely stronger mentally now.

I've started doubting when the American had a 2-0 lead in the second but this is just the way Halep lost the final last year...so some kind of a justice I believe, looks like she never stopped believing and that was the difference really.

Also I think Halep has the better B-game of the two and generally looks the more completed player really, they're both relatively young (25) so there's might be a few finals ahead of them still.

  • So, Halep finally won that Grand Slam and I didn't get to watch the match! I had watched all the three finals that she lost but yesterday I was on the road, returning home from my vacation, so I couldn't watch the final. I did listen to a radio broadcast of the match while driving, the first time I listen to a radio broadcast of a tennis match, and you can imagine I was quite happy with the result ;)

  • I'm very happy for Halep. So deserving. Huge congratulation.    <:-P

  • Congrats Johnny, should be a thriller listening that on a radio :)

I think we're all happy for her after the 3 lost GS finals a well deserved title but there's many examples with some of the greatest players in the past that the first one comes harder so I don't expect she would stop there.

  • should be a thriller listening that on a radio :)

I'm just going to say that I hope I'll never have to do that again :)

I'm just going to say that I hope I'll never have to do that again :)

I've been listened to football and hockey matches on the radio but can't even imagine what is like for tennis, should be a nightmare really, especially for a match you're so involved as a fan..wasn't even heard of a live tennis radio coverage.

  • About 20,000 people welcomed Simona Halep back home tonight on the National Arena in Bucharest, I was there and it was pretty emotional. Well done to her, she has been working very hard and really deserved this.

  • And Aleksandra Krunic won her first title at the Libéma Open. :) Not a big deal but still, very nice. She was a very promising junior player, grew up in Moscow. Later on, she admitted to being lazy, and that she didn't want to spend enough hours on the court.

    Congrats.

  • I just saw Barty - Conta final at the grass in Nothingham, very pleased for Barty, think she has a bit of old style, good net play and easy of the eye game.

Like this kind of players which have the shots, technique and net present, who proves you're not suppose to be 1.90 with a man's body, power and service to win anything in the women's tennis these days.

  • Anyone to stop Serena gaining her's eight at Wimbledon?!

I wouldn't bet on that...looks inevitable like the death and taxes.

I don't think she can be stopped, she's by far better than any of the other players.

Yeah, not with any of the players that are still in the tournament anyway, maybe just Kerber of those have ever beaten her before..anywhere.

  • Giorgi played well yesterday, not enough of course.

But she's a bit ridiculous. They asked her opinion on Serena, before the QF match, and she answered something like I don't know her, I don't watch women's tennis.

    LOL

that's a bit too much. Giorgi throwing shade at Serena. :D

  • I've had never seen Giorgi in play until that match, but I was pretty much fascinated by her style - no fear really.

She almost made Serena looking stupid in the first set, most of the men's player don't play that brave really.

    I don't blame her for not watching women's tennis - men's better :)

  • The perfect day at Wimbledon was completed after the Serena's loss, 7 time champion and still looking ridiculous when she should execute a simple volley, that would of be something hilarious in the old times.

Kerber looked as calm...as only a German could it be.

  • Serena is such a great champion, one of the best tennis players ever, that after the childbirth and complications that followed it only nine months ago (her life was in danger again), she can allow herself some loose volleys. :)

And as for Kerber,  even though she's not one of my favorite players, she showed some great tennis at Wimbledon. She came out with a clear plan and stuck to it through out the match - that was too much for Serena at this moment. Congrats.

  • Maybe Serena was afraid of playing Osaka again. :D

5-1 up in the third set and three match points.

5-1 up in the third set and three match points.

Wow...that was a tough way to loose a match...foot fault at match ball and than a sprained ankle(despite that she was still able to move good enough though) but even I've felt almost sorry for Serena...almost ;)

Maybe that's just a guess but I don't think she would of going to beat Osaka anyway, sorry to see Pliskova loosing another tight match on the GS tournament latest stages but I don't think she has shown enough character to beat the Japanese.
