The UK-based non-profit organization, GamCare, which provides support for those affected by gambling-related harm, recently released its Annual Report for 2022-23. The report highlights a notable surge in the volume of calls received, marking the highest level on record.

In the past year, GamCare fielded 44,049 calls or chat interactions through its National Gambling Helpline, reflecting a 4.7% year-on-year increase and setting a new record.

A total of 38,456 treatment sessions were conducted, encompassing 9,009 Extended Brief Interventions (EBIs). Impressively, 92% of those who undertook an EBI successfully completed the course, with a commendable 71% of all users finishing their treatment.

Margot Daly, Chair of Trustees at GamCare, says that in their 25th year, it’s heartening to witness the substantial efforts being made to assist individuals facing gambling-related challenges. They have made significant strides in elevating the profile of gambling harm treatment and support, encouraging more individuals to seek help. Moving forward, the focus remains on breaking down barriers to access support and providing top-notch services that have the potential to transform lives.

More Details on the Research

In terms of demographics, 68% of hotline users identified as male, 30% as female, and 2% as transgender or having other gender representations. A notable 87% of individuals sought out GamCare services due to their own gambling issues, while the remaining 13% sought assistance for someone else's gambling problems.

Daly further added:

“We look forward to building further our impact in the year ahead and continuing the important work that the third sector delivers towards reducing gambling harms in Great Britain.”

In the realm of education and outreach, a total of 64,372 individuals completed a gambling awareness training course. Among them were 45,562 young participants who attended a gambling awareness workshop, showcasing a noteworthy 60% increase from the previous year's figures.
