Back France’s Online Gambling Market Reports 2021 Q1 Growth

L’Autorite Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), French gambling regulator, has published the report for the nation’s gambling figures in the first quarter of this year.

The aggregated revenue during the period of January 1st - March 31st amounted to EUR 587 million ($715 million), which is a yearly increase of 35%.

Cautious Growth

This dynamic growth of the online gambling market was contributed to by record stakes in sports and horse racing betting.

The online gaming in France was driven by 3.1 million player accounts which is an increase in player base of 19% compared to 2020.

Every online gambling segment saw an increase in stakes, player base and revenue during Q1. The health crisis has contributed to the acceleration of digital gambling practices.

ANJ’s report says that this growth should be viewed with caution because it is influenced by “the loss of business linked to the suspension of French sports betting and horse racing betting and, on the other hand, they are oriented downwards for the online poker market, due to the peak of business recorded at the same period last year.”

Sports Betting on the Up

The online sports betting vertical in France experienced the most spectacular growth in placed bets, with EUR 2.2 billion in stakes which is a 79% increase year-on-year.

ANJ’s Chair, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, asserts that this rate of sports betting activity will continue during the second quarter as UEFA EURO Championship starts and the Summer Olympic Games are slated to begin in Tokyo.

France’s poker segment was hit badly during the 2020’s crisis but is now starting to recover. The 23% yearly rise and 9% surge in active player numbers are the proof of this.

Horse racing operators in France - six of them in total - have processed EUR 110 million in online bets in the first quarter of 2021. This amounted to the 48% year-on-year surge, while the sector saw its stakes improve 60% to an all-time high of EUR 481 million.
