Expansion control to be introduced
The latest reports from Macau inform of the government’s plans to slow down the industry’s expansion in the near future, along with a warning that the current high growth in the gambling market on the island will not continue indefinitely.
According to the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, the government plans to control the level of expansion of the sector. He added that "in future we shall only see the industry increasing by a few percentage points every year" and warned that young people should think twice before joining the industry, because he believes its profitability will not go on forever.
The February financial results reported from Macau noted a 48 percent growth year-on-year and 33 percent over January 2011, mostly thanks to mainland Chinese visitors.
