President calls for prison sentence

A new development in the Russian severe gambling ban occurred this week, as the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that many gambling operations have gone underground. He suggested that sterner measures should be applied for all clandestine gambling sites and casinos in Moscow, stating that they should be closed and their owners sent to prison, reported Itar Tass.com.

At this week’s meeting with Moscow City Mayor, Medvedev stated: “Of late I receive much information that clandestine gambling sites became wide spread in Moscow,” instructing the Mayor “to take necessary measures, conduct raids and find those who violate the law," and went on to say that “those involved in such gambling businesses should be imprisoned.”

Mayor Sobyanin stated that “together with law enforcement agencies necessary raids will be held,” promising that the results will be reported to the President.
