Arabic for ‘harbour of peace’, comes the city Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania is both size and trade. An active economic centre, you’ll find bars and nightclubs, restaurants, hotels and attractions. People often think ‘Serengeti’ when here, and this is a good time to book that safari. If you’re a hiking extremist, there’s Mount Kilimanjaro. If you’re more the indoors kind of person for your history and culture, there’s the National Museum and the Village Museum. Near the former, you can also find the Botanical Gardens and check out the indigenous flora. To best understand Tanzanian culture, aside from rubbing shoulders with the locals, is visiting the newly constructed House of Culture.

If you love the outdoors, then this is a fantastic area for you especially if you’re looking to safari through the Serengeti. Hikers will like nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. To check out local ruins, there’s the Kaole Ruins over in Bagamayo an hour out. To appreciate local culture head to the aptly named House of Culture which opened its doors in 2011, celebrating Tanzanian heritage. For museums there’s the National Museum and the Village Museum.
