Named after former Jalisco governor, Ignacio Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta is a resort city in the Mexican state of Jalisco and has a population of around 255,000 people. There’s plenty to do here, but most people probably recognize this resort destination for its night life and beaches. The region is great for any number of water activities, from the mundane like sunning and swimming, to the more exciting snorkeling, scuba diving and swimming with dolphins. To catch a wide breadth of sea birds and marine life like mantas, dolphins and humpback whales, take a day trip over to the Marieta Islands, about a 30 minute boat ride from the Vallarta Marina.

Gaming

The casino provides a selection of classic and video slot machines, coming in various denominations. Try your luck on a jackpot machine – a good sized win could fund some of the more expensive activities you’d like to participate in, or cover some pesky bar tabs when you’re out nights. There’s also electronic bingo and a sportsbook where you wager on horse-racing and televised sporting events.

Hotel/Accommodations

Cradled between the Banderas Bay and Sierra Madre Mountains, is the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort, a 4 diamond luxury getaway. Rooms are decked out in classic Mexican décor, and include balconies or terraces, and total 29 luxury suites and 404 guest rooms. Non-smoking rooms are also available. High speed internet is available for a fee. The hotel includes 4 restaurants, meeting rooms and banquet facilities. You can also find a fitness centre and spa on site. If traveling with family ask about their kid’s club and associated activities.

Dining

For authentic Mexican cuisine and fine cuts of steak, head to La Estancia, open for breakfasts and dinners. For casual dining, there’s the Champions Sports Bar with its big screen tvs. Enjoy Thai and Japanese fare in Mikado. Other venues include Emiliano, El Arrayan, epoca and La Ribera, the latter which also has breakfast buffets. For seafood dishes, turn to Adauto’s Beach Club or Le Kliff.

Attractions/NightLife

Head over to the Marieta Islands to check out the marine life, go snorkeling, scuba diving, or swim with the dolphins or try one of the local beaches, such as Playa Camarones (Shrimp Beach), Playa Olas Altas (High Waves Beach), Playa Los Muertos (Beach of the Dead), Playa Boca de Tomates (Mouth of Tomatoes) or Playa Conchas Chinas (Chinese Shells Beach). You can also stroll along the newly reconstructed seashore in the Malecon. If you’re looking to grab extra supplies or pick out a few souvenirs, try one of the local markets like Mercado Isle Cuale or Mercado Municipal Cuale. For local and pre-Hispanic art, try the Cuale Archaeological Museum. Head to the city’s main square, the Plaza de Armas, where you can find free public concerts. Come night time, head to one of the local pubs or clubs. Options include La Regadera, La Ingrata, Bar Oceano, BeboTero with live music, and Club Roxy Rock House. Local festivals include the Flower and Garden Festival (February), Electro Beach (March), May Festival, Dia de Muertos (November) and Los Posadas (December).
