Casino Barriere Jonzac

Jonzac is a town in south-western France, located in the department of Charente-Maritime and the region of Poitou-Charentes Jonzac was built on two hills, on the banks of the Seugne. Look for small islands and waterfalls dotting the area. Atop the 2 hills (Balaguier and Montguimar) you can find the two primary buildings, the church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais and a local castle. Castle Jonzac dates back to the 15th century, though it saw significant changes during the 19th century. The church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais may go back as far as the middle ages, though the current building is marked as from the 7th century. One of the last vestiges of the fortified wall that surrounded the castle district is the city gate, dating back to the 15th century. Fauna in the area include the European mink, otter, the horseshoe bat and the European pond turtle. For local entertainment, look for comedy shows and concerts in the casino, or head to one of the nearby bars and soak up some local culture.

Dine in the casino restaurant, with its rotating menu, changing monthly, and serving traditional French cuisine. The restaurant is open daily for lunch, Monday through Saturday from noon until 1 pm, and Sundays, noon to 2:30 pm. Dinners run Monday to Thursday 7 pm to 11 pm and Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays until 11:30 pm. During dinner shows, hours extend until midnight. Other options include Hostellerie du Coq d’Or, Moulin du Val de Seugne, Chateau de Mirambeau and Restaurant de Bordeaux.

Enjoy comedy shows, concerts and opera in The Theatre. Find your favourite cocktails in the casino bar The Blue Lagoon. To rub shoulders with the locals, try Gaborit Lucienne. For dancing, there’s Le Pacific. Religious sites in the area include Chapel Maladrerie, the remnants of a leper colony from the 15th century, the Carmelite Convent, founded in 1505, and the church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, in its current incarnation, dating back to the 7th century. Other attractions include Castle Jonzac, Spa Jonzac, and the city gate. Walk through various green areas, like parks, footpaths and arboretums.
