A Californian, Chuck Patterson, 43, has invented a new extreme sport, surfing on waves up to 30ft high - on a pair of water skis. He has combined his talents as a professional skier and surfer to become the world's first 'wave skier'.
In contrast to water skiers, who are always towed by a speedboat, wave skiing invoves being released at the peak of a wave to ski 'freestyle'. After letting go of the rope from the jet ski, he reaches speeds of around 30mph as he drops off the huge waves. Chuck uses ski poles to help him balance, while his custom-made skis are a combination of water and snow skis.
He said: "The sport feels similar to skiing on snow in warm temperatures when the snow is soft. The feeling when you drop in off a wave is a bit sketchy at first just because you're going so fast. I don't think there is anyone else in the world doing it but for me it is just a bit of fun alongside my surfing and snow skiing."
This seems to be fun. :D
