Weird Superstitions

I thought it might be fun to list some superstitions. Here is a list of mine that I learned while growing up. Please note that I am from Mostly Irish descent:

1. NO bird figurines in the house(bad luck).
2. Always come in the same door you came out of.
3. Never prolong waving goodbye to someone as they will get bad luck.
4. Drop a fork a woman is coming by soon.
5. Drop a knife a man is coming by soon.
6. Drop a spoon and a baby is coming either by birth or to your house.

I am sure I will think of more at some point!!!

*If you spill salt, put some in your right hand and throw over your left shoulder*

*never set your bed with the foot of the bed directly in front of the bedroom door*
(It's an old Italian superstition- leading to death)

*itchy palm=money

*itchy nose=fight

*ears ringing= someone is talking about you

.....yes, Debo, my Mom was big on the knife,fork,spoon thing too 

...and don't put new shoes on the table,

Never say "it has never happened to me" when talking about something bad.

Itchy palm  - give with the right and receive (money) in the left depending on which one is itching.

don't walk under a ladder

Broken mirror - 7 years bad luck.

Those are off the top of my head.

Hi debo.. let me see... theres some i follow and have been forever.. i never use the last match out of a book of matches, while walking together never split poles, those are both badluck, find a cat whisker it's good luck, see a penny pick it up all the day you have goodluck

Never carry a shovel into the house= Burying someone later
Black cat crosses path=Bad luck (I have had that happen 100's of times, nothing happened)

Okay, I just heard a crazy one from a friend.....

If you put a knife under the bed during childbirth, it cuts the pain down. HAHAHAH

Geez...I don't know where to start...since I was growing up in place where most people  believe in superstitions that have been handed down from a long time ago and I never understood why my grandmother,mother,aunts,...would said so many weird saying that didn't make any senses at all but now? well...I don't believe in them, but I can't ignore them.
*Don't cut your nails at night, some animals like mice will eat your nails, and then they'll become you or they'll take your spirit..
*Never face the bed north, you will have nightmares and will bring you a bad luck.
*Don't step on the door frame,your good luck will blow away.
*If you break mirror in the morning, something bad will come in your way.
* if you see crows or ravens when you are leaving your house, you will be in trouble and have bad luck all day but if you see magpies or listen to their calls  early in the morning, you will have good luck for a day.
*Don't present a boyfriend or a girlfriend with a pair of shoes. If you do, your boyfriend or girlfriend will leave you.

Funny thing about this all. Check out (I am not sure of location) the Northen New Englad places. Barns with hex symbols painted on buildings and this has been for generations!

Make me wonder about that area..Evil rests and waits maybe??

Hi Genenco- I was born and  raised in New England and alot of those hex signs has to do with the Salem Witch Trials. New England sure does have a lot of spooky places and lore. Maybe thats why I moved to Florida-lol.

Break a mirror - seven years bad luck
Never look into a mirror in the dark while saying bloody mary (this i think maybe more of a urban legend) What do you think?

I thought of another one- Do not open an umbrella inside ANYWHERE- Real bad luck coming your way.

my own supertition,

when I'm on a winning streak, I wont get a hair-cut, I wont cut my nails, it doesnt matter how long or dirty it gonna be, lol. 

hair cut, cut nails = cut your winning streak off

and I'll do the opposite when I hit a losing streak, it means to shake off my bad luck and start winning again, lol

Another thing to mention about the penny, i mentioned it earlier as well as lips, and me too it started when i was very young, when i would pick up the penny i'd say the little saying. I had faith it will bring Goodluck!

On my daughters birthday, i gave her a 5 gallon water jug with a penny in it i picked up, and told her for now on put your pennies you pick up in this jug, and on your next birthday we will see how much you got. To my surprize she loved it, every penny went in there she and i found on the ground, next birthday came and she wanted to continue filling it.. It got so full we had to move it with a dollie, couldn't lift it, 7 years she filled it finally we tipped it over and started counting just for fun, we made piles of 1,000 all over the living room and down the hall, we got tired only half way through but it was up to 142,000

Sooo see a penny pick it up.. and years later you'll have some bucks!

I just got a new haircut when I recently had 3 days losing, lol.  I sure did look like a caveman couple days ago. lol.

my own supertition,

When you dream about fish, a relative or someone close to you is pregnant

Wow! I never heard of that one! I wonder what a fish has to do with it...

Oh boy where to start is right, my mother also tells us the one about buying shoes for your man,if you do he will walk away from you,(to this day we have to buy shoes for my Dad, that she wants him to have) please don't laugh too hard
Also my mother says if you sweep the floor and sweep the debris out over the threshold you will sweep your man away,(my parents will celebrate 51 years of marriage this year, hmm...)
Right palm itches,money coming in, left palm itches, money going out.
And never NEVER throw nail or hair clippings away where someone can get ahold of them,or I guess they can work a mojo on you, I never asked so I'm guessing here.
And the dreaming of fish thing(someone is pregnant) shes mentioned too,when I was younger either I or one of my sisters mentioned dreaming of fish and I swear she looked at us through squinted suspicious eyes for days after, sheesh!
Also don't talk about your dreams (bad dreams) before you eat breakfast or they will come true. My mother says she was born with a "veil" over her face,and her mother believed in a lot of that stuff so maybe thats why,oddly my dear mother scoffs at the idea of me and my sister going to get readings from Irene Hughes....go figure.

Has anyone heard of this one?  Always get up in bed the same way you came in bed-don't switch sides- if you do bad things coming your way!

  Here is a casino one,  If you win big allways tip someone.

  Last time I won a large ammount at the land casino the hostess and girl with the money left before I had the chance.  So I tipped the guy next to me $40.  Right before we left he was broke looking for tickets, we said hi and gave him $20 more.  On the next spin my girlfriend won an extra $500.  That was a good day.

Here is another thing-Always play the end machines in a land based casino because they are usually programmed to win! Read that somewhere.

O, I got some more!!!

*if you die in the water, you will be a ghost forever and never find your way to the afterlife.

The first day of the new year you should eat greens (representing dollars) black eyed peas (representing coins) seafood (good luck) and the first person who crosses your front door threshold should always be a man.
If you drop a broom on the floor and happen to step over it, thats supposed to be bad luck, and peacock feathers inside your house is bad luck also.
Also make sure you wash all dirty laundry before the New year arrives or you'll have trouble keeping up with your laundry for the rest of the year, and NEVER bring in the New year without a few dollars in your purse or wallet, or you will be broke for the rest of the year!
