  • Brittany Maynard was diagnosed with brain cancer on New Year's Day not long after wedding husband Dan Diaz. 9 days later doctors performed brain surgery to prevent tumor from growing, but in April it returned at stage 4 cancer. Her prognosis......6 months to live.

“I’ve had the medication for weeks,” she wrote in an op-ed for CNN. “I am not suicidal. If I were, I would have consumed that medication long ago. I do not want to die. But I am dying. And I want to die on my own terms.”

“Doctors prescribed full brain radiation,” she wrote in the op-ed. “I read about the side effects: The hair on my scalp would have been singed off. My scalp would be left covered with first-degree burns. My quality of life, as I knew it, would be gone.”

“After months of research, my family and I reached a heartbreaking conclusion,” she wrote. “There is no treatment that would save my life, and the recommended treatments would have destroyed the time I had left.”

Oregon is one of 5 states that have passed the law Death with Dignity Act. Brittany has decided to take her own life with prescribed meds from a physician and end her life on November 1st just 2 days after her husband's birthday.

“Now, I’m able to move forward in my remaining days or weeks I have on this beautiful Earth, to seek joy and love and to spend time traveling to outdoor wonders of nature with those I love,” she wrote. “And I know that I have a safety net.”

Do you think she is making the right decision and should all states allow this?

  • Wow Lips that story brings tears to my eyes literally. I think when a person is dying and there's nothing that can save their life then yes they should be able to take their life like Brittany. I think all states should pass that law. On a personal note right before I was to marry my fiance was diagnosed with cancer, he passed away 2 years after that diagnosis. He did radiation and chemo back to back and had the surgery and still he died, he was only 31. So basically the last 2 years of his life was in and out of the hospital. Who wants that?

  • I can understand her not wanting the radiation but I really cannot understand her wanting to take her own life on a set date in the not too distant future.  It makes me feel sad and sick to my stomach.  I can understand when a person is suffering agonising pain and there are no medicines to relieve the pain but if she isn't suffering in that way, why not grab every day that she can rather then ending it like this.

I reallly cannot imagine a member of my family telling me something like this - it would be just too hard to come to terms with.

That said, she has a right to choose to end her life if it is legal and whilst I don't agree with these "Dignitas" type places, I can see why a person would choose this route.

  • It's very difficult to judge somebody who is going through what this girl is. I try to put myself in her shoes and I really can't make a decision. I guess I would undergo treatment and hope for the best, if there's a 1% chance I'd like to take that chance despite all the pain.

  • It's one of those topics that will get heated debates going everywhere..

I only think one person has the right to decide though and that is this beautiful young woman herself...
Now, she says she has thought this through, and one may assume that is the case, however, i am hoping she will think some more, and at least try other options: as there always are, experimental medicine, holistic medicine, etc.

I for one would go to the treatment, and if then i would find myself living an unworthy life, and with little or no looking forward to fully recuperating, then i would likely resort to ending it all.
That said, my late Grandfather is one of the few persons that has taken his own life, under similar circumstances...

We all got to say goodbye, and we all understood..
However, there is of course a difference in such a young girl's early death and the death of an old man that has lead a long and good life..
One would sooner understand the latter

Anyway, i believe in miracles, and even lived through or experienced a few small wonders myself, so i am the last one to give up hope or lose faith.
I hope for a miracle recovery here, that's about all i can do.

    .

  • Quite incredible, so I can't even imagine how difficult her situations is, and for her family as well. It's her life so I think she has the right to end it the way she wants.

  • For me, I think I would fight to my last breath.  I respect Oregon and am glad people have that option.  I would claw and scratch to make it as long as I could, though

im totally agree with u wmmeden

There is also a similar story happened to someone from my country. I advise her to think twice before making a decision or doing something that is not good, Now we will not feel to regret, but what if were not here in this world ?
but it is her choice so we're leaving it to God smiley
  • I can't see making this choice unless I had received every treatment possible first. It feels like she's giving up to me.

  • I believe everyone should have the right to remove themselves from this earth.  In her situation I can absolutely understand her not wanting to subject herself to the treatment options in front of her but the last thing I would ever believe is a medical community telling me I had 6 months to live.  Was that with or without treatment?  If without I would certainly have my plan in place to go quickly but would wait it out until I started getting sick, who knows, that 6 months could be a year which is a long time to be able to do more things.
Poor thing though , what a shitty hand she was dealt.

  • it is all in your brain... if she fight maybe doctor will be wrong or something, and for me man is dead when give up. This is not solution, you must live and fight no metter for anything else. Maybe she daying but maybe she can live a year or two. never know, never give up

  • 7 days left  untill 1st November.. angel angel

  • I just read the People magazine article after following this story- in this article she says she has very bad days already where she is in intense pain and incoherent at time and has seizures already so it made more sense to me knowing she has already began her downhill spiral- they also showed a picture of the tumor in her brain and it takes up half the brain in size- it is huge- they have exhausted every possible cure in this country and others and the entire family moved to Oregon so they could be in a state that allows compassionate death.  She has 200 pills that the plan is to have her mother, step father, husband and best friend break up and put into water on the day that she decides to end her life, which may not necessarily be on Nov 1st (she says it depends on how she actually feels that day).  This girl has traveled the world in her 29 short years and has experienced so much more than most people will in their lifetime.  I feel so bad for her mom, this girl is an only child and it must be unbearable knowing she only has two options for her child, to watch her in immense pain or watch her die.  Such a sad sad story.

  • Being a Veterinary Technician and being able to heal animals forever of their terminal illnesses and pains in a more than dignified way, I only wish that I had this choice for myself and also that my Grandma could have made this choice for herself.  Why would you want to suffer knowing that it will be all you do until the end of your days?

  • Bad Move she Should not do that

  • It made me feel so crap that I haven't even finished reading first post..  sleepy life can be so unfair..

  • she is very beautiful girl i cant believe she is that sick , it's a sad story i dont know what to say about this I have no rights to decide about someones life hard to tell she knows what she feels
