The Spanish online gambling market is still developing and increasingly making its mark on the casino industry – despite being one of Europe’s largest markets, it is also one of the younger ones. Spain offers players in its territories the opportunity to play at third party sites, with many of the legal online operators still working towards licensing.
In such an environment, it may or may not come as a total surprise that 2017 Q2 was historical in many ways for this country on the Iberian Peninsula. Well, truthfully, in every conceivable way! Direccion General de Ordenacion del Juego – the country’s online gambling regulative body – has revealed that a total revenue during this second quarter has sky-rocketed to over €121 million – an increase of 22.6% since last year. In total, 646,000 players were active during this period.
In addition to this, virtually every sector of the market has seen a significant increase in revenue, compared to the same period last year. Revenue in sports betting increased by 12.3%, while online slot revenues made a massive jump with a whopping 84% (!) surge in revenue. Not far behind are numbers made in the live roulette sector, seeing a 66% boost compared to the same period in 2016. Total online casino revenues rose by 52.5%, while blackjack and online poker numbers made a “measly” 10.2% and 5% gain, respectively. Live betting accounted for 68.5% of total revenues.
We at LCB are very gladdened to witness such a fantastic soar in Spain’s online gaming market! Does this indicate a revival of sorts for the rest of the European market, or do you think it will be isolated to Spain? Let us know what you think, we value it!

Wow, big increase in Online gambling. I think that some younger generations found online gambling and sport betting much easier to get access. The number of 646,000 for just a quarter is surprising, as I suppose. The revenue increased 52.5% in total revenues of online casinos, which is very surprising.

Spain must have a good economy to support a dramatic increase in recreational spending! It must be nice for the Spanish people to see their country embrace gambling, especially on an international level that lets outside operators legally offer Spanish players their services. The US government relates gambling to criminals, terrorism, money laundering and of course that can be true, but it's less likely in countries that legalize gambling and closely monitor outside sites operating within their regulations . I don't understand why my country can't see gambling as another business industry and outside operators as part of our legal trade agreement with other countries. I know Spanish players are enjoying their new recreational activities and I wish them much good luck.

That's really impressive! With improving economy, liberalized regulation and growing demand for online gaming, I think a significant increase in revenue is expected to be seen not just in Spain, but also for the rest of the European gambling market...
