Suncity Group has been one of the candidates for a Macau gambling license in 2022. The operator hoped to receive a license as current authorizations soon expire and two additional licenses could be granted. However, after the serious accusations regarding inclusion in online gambling procedures, Suncity Casino has decreased its chances of receiving a license.
Details
According to the GGRAsia report, the Group has been one of the candidates for the upcoming Macau tender. After Chinese service, Xinhua, announced that it has been promoting online gambling outside of China territory, Suncity chances have drastically dropped.
Director of the Gaming and Research Center at Macao Polytechnic Institute, Wang Changbin said:
“For sure the company’s “chances to be a Macau casino license bidder would be affected” because the media assertions “create a bad record. Online gaming and promotion of gaming are criminal offenses in mainland China, and the government is aware of its negative impact on the economy there and is concerned with how it could result in the capital outflow.”
Further Observations
Reacting to a possible outcome, Global Market Advisors LLC member, Brendan Bussmann said:
“Media revelation could damage the company’s plans for a concession, as license applicants, existing and historical activities in other markets whether that be from a land-based or even online perspective play a role in the decision-making process.”
He added:
“Since Macau opened up casinos beyond the original monopoly, the central government has provided numerous warnings against activities its views are not aligned with the social-economic system.”
Suncity Reaction
Suncity negated all allegations, explaining that is hasn't been included in proxy or online gaming activities. It observed:
“The Company has no possession of any casino and gaming tables, neither does it operate any online gaming business.”
It seems that allegations had a significant impact on the Group’s position. With this suggestion, the casino has probably lost the possibility of becoming a Macau licensee.
