The Fateful FA Cup Match

A punter from Finland has reached out to this new online gambling operator from Austria and placed a $50 wager on Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur to beat lower-league Hereford United in the FA Cup’s fourth round on this cold January day.

The odds of Tottenham winning were 1.04 and, sure enough, they did win, and our Finnish hero profited by just $2.

However, it was a moment of history. A game-changer.

Up until that day, the betting industry had only known in-person and telephone wagering.

From that day on, there was also online gambling.

Intertops was established in London in 1983 and offered bookmaking services to German players via telephone and cash sent via post.
