Back Disney Donates $5m to Voters in Charge

Disney corp. contributed $5 million to the anti-casino amendment in September. The measure is to be voted on during the mid-term election on November 6th. If approved, it will put Floridians in charge of the state’s gambling industry (see below).

The Seminole Tribe of Florida matched the donation. Interestingly enough, the entity operates a number of casinos countrywide.

These latest donations bring the sum up to a total of $19.7m for Disney and to $16.8m for the Seminoles. Both are expected to intensify their contributions as the ballot draws nearer.

Voters in Charge Have Their Say

The donations have been made to Voters in Charge, vocal supporters of the anti-casino sentiment. Their announcement reads:

“Amendment 3 ensures that Florida voters, not Tallahassee politicians, control decisions about casino gambling in our state. For decades, approval of casino gambling was strictly left for Florida voters to decide. Only in the last few years have Tallahassee politicians decided they can legalize casinos without voter approval. Amendment 3 restores the system of requiring approval of casino gambling by Florida voters.”

The Voters in Charge Committee has stated that the campaign “continues to gain momentum in critical areas of the effort, including fundraising, grassroots, and social media.” The initiative will appear on the November ballot as Amendment 3.

The 60% Majority

Should the Amendment 3 gain the support of the majority of voters at the upcoming ballot, it will modify the Constitution by allowing a 60% majority of voters to decide on any and all proposed changes targeting Florida’s gambling industry.
