With Las Vegas and the U.S. as a whole, both reeling and mourning over the mass shooting that recently wreaked havoc at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on October 1st, we have more details to share about gunman, Stephen Paddock. It has been revealed that the 64-year-old was staying in one of Mandalay Bay’s Vista Suites ($500-$600/night) for free. According to reports, the shooter’s gambling habits earned him a comped room. His game of choice was video poker, and his brother describes him as a “substantial gambler,” adding that it “was a job to him.”
Sources say he played up to 1,000 hands of video poker over the course of an hour, spending approximately $100,000! Paddock had been spotted at VIP tournaments throughout Sin City, both winning and losing six-figure amounts. It is also believed that he was quite the boozer, with witnesses of tournaments he participated in, claiming he was constantly with a drink in hand. Anthony Curtis, former professional gambler and consultant for the Alea Consulting Group, made the following statement: “He was a heavy drinker, heavy drinker, that’s what I heard… some people thought he was a pure alcoholic.”
Paddock ultimately carried out his horrific plan, by using his knowledge of the hotel and shift changes every 8 hours, transferring weapons to his suite in thirteen cases. Following a check-in on September 28th, he opened fire on Sunday, October 1st, from his 32nd-floor suite. He then took his own life.
At this time, there is still no clear motive as to why Paddock masterminded this tragic massacre. The official death count has been set at 58, with more than 500 injured last Sunday.

now that time has passed we have had many other crazy people doing killing sprees and mass murders. in the past few days there has been 3 incidents i know of (in the us). so it is not calming down obviously. i believe there will be more and that somebody crazy enough is going to try and better the las vegas bodycount someday....

I agree with Vanenhox! This most likely cannot be the last shootings the world would ever hear! Security should have caught some type of suspicion from him to be transferring weapons like that! I don't think I want to visit Mandalay Bay based on this crisis! Damn, wonder what he was thinking?

Somehow I have a feeling that this worst shooting ever in the US will not be the last story of this type we will sooner or later hear about in the news. I wish something could be done to somehow change the phenomenon of mass shootings. It is so discouraging to hear about these incidents. One can lose hope and heart...

One can lose hope and heart after a while when these events become more or less a regular feature of life in today's world.

He spent his comps for free rooms. I don't know but drinking and gambling do not get along well from my experience. But, maybe drinking still can be Ok with video poker games, as I guess. Anyway, thank for follow-ups.

This is where the saying,"Money can't buy happiness" comes in. He has substantial income, yet he had no peace of mind. Why would anyone want to transfer his problems to others like that instead of going for counseling? Lastly, the gun laws should be reexamined.

Really tragic what happened. And the horrific nature of what he did. And how this could have happened at a place riddled with security. It just reminds me of the Security Mirage. The feeling of security and the reality of security don't always match. These large hotels have all kinds of "security theater," Products...

Good story, Natalie. I wondered how he managed to smuggle so many weapons into his hotel room. Las Vegas security is pretty intense and your article clears up some of the details.

K9s are awesome, but I think the only way for them to sniff out weapons is by gunpowder, so obviously that's not gonna work. They need more security terminals with metal detectors and x-rays, there's a mass shooting every other month now for god's sake. And less news coverage of these tragedies, stop giving ideas to mentally...

A small digression but somewhat relevant i think . ive seen a lot of K9 dogs at several Las Vegas Strip Casinos, when I was there last August. I thought it was weird since ive never noticed them during my past visits. Unfortunately due to this sad event it is obvious there is a need for much tighter security which is...

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. What a very sad story. I still can't fathom how he go into the motel anyway? Really?

A terrible, terrible tragedy. Casino security failed miserably for sure when the sick guy managed to smuggle 13 cases of weaponry!
