A report from Business Day on Wednesday indicates that the South African government may opt to ban online gambling, including a proposal to ban dog racing, rather than moving forward with licensing and regulation of the industry.
It has been reported that the proposals are still being considered by the National Gambling Policy Council. A final draft will be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval prior to welcoming public comment.
The Democratic Alliance spokesman Geordin Hill-Lewis said, "That is a very, very bad decision. I fiercely disagree with that view. It is completely shortsighted to say that it is better for South Africans not to be allowed to gamble online when there is patently significant demand in the country to do that. It is for government to facilitate that in the safest way possible."
There are valid points toward the cost associated with enforcing gambling prohibition is S.A.; however some opinions are that problem gambling and personal debt are higher than any country.

Its a load of BS this nonsense the ruling party (ANC) is actually wasting with this when South Africa faces so many more issues at the moment like the ever increasing crime, water and electicity problems but instead they looking at this, the DA is correct in saying that its clear there is a need for gambling services in SA rather use it as a way to create jobs which is so badly needed here rather than restrict it further, South Africans will just do it anyway, with our current presedent and his cabnit constantly making headlines for theft and corruption the example they leave if any is to just do it anyway

Due to the internet being do freely opened and so hard to manage some governments think its for their "the government" best interest not to even allow gambling online. They figure its' going to cost them more money to try and regulate on top of the corruption that will arise from having online gambling legal. Take a look at the Philippines there is so much corruption from the officers and mayors collect money from companies that are situated their its not funny. Then they mention valid points toward the cost associated with enforcing gambling prohibition is S.A.; however some opinions are that problem gambling and personal debt are higher than any country. Its really too bad for the people like myself who enjoy gambling online. Not having to drive 3 hours plus just gamble for a couple of hours. You save on gas and time just to game online. I love it.

If SA decides to go ahead and ban online gambling in their country, it will turn out just like it does in other countries that have a ban on online gambling. People that want to gamble online will find a way, especially if they are problem gamblers. What about the costs, which will be more, those preventing gambling online or those monitoring the safety and protection of legal online gambling. I look forward to hearing the SA public comments on this subject.

We have the similar problems here in Bulgaria when the government decides to ban all the leading bookies if they don't pay 15% taxes.I was very sqared at the time but everything seems to be OK now, nobody talks for that anymore and I hope it will stay this way for the future.

If they are talking about a full ban including online casinos with slots etc, that would be very bad news for operators who specifically target the South African market and use the Rand ( I believe that's the right name) as currency. It seems all over (as yapro123 mentioned) that a lot of places are banning online gambling...
If they are talking about a full ban including online casinos with slots etc, that would be very bad news for operators who specifically target the South African market and use the Rand ( I believe that's the right name) as currency. It seems all over (as yapro123 mentioned) that a lot of places are banning online gambling at the moment and it would be a scary time to have the success of your business wholly or mostly dependent on online gambling revenue.

Ban, ban, ban. Articles with word 'ban' just growing and growing, and for sure this is something that make me worry. While gambling markets are still growing, there is many countries who try to put their hands and get some piece of the pie. I hope this will not ruine everything one day.
