If you fancy an imaginary trip to Las Vegas, where the neon lights shine bright and the slot machines keep spinning around the clock, then we might have you covered with this game. However, you should also expect to travel back in time as well, all the way back to the 1980s. 

The game creators at Playreels have put together Retro Neon with those glorious years in mind, no doubt about that. That said, let’s see whether this voyage will be thrilling as a Vegas casino or dull as a rainy afternoon.

Theme

This game tries to glue together the neon lights that take you back to the 1980s and the vintage fruit slot machine that can take the trip back into time all the way to the beginning of the 20th century. 

In fact, all the symbols are taken from the classic slot machines, starting with the usual fruits and ending with a Liberty Bell, a BAR symbol and the iconic Lucky Number 7. 

Unfortunately, the background music is just a generic tune that doesn’t really say anything, it would have been nice to hear a bouncy disco theme or something along those lines. 

Betting Options and Functions

This is a classic slot with 5 reels and 3 rows, offering 243 ways to win. You will need at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels to grab a win, but any winning combination has to start on the leftmost reel. 

The minimum allowed bet is 0.25 coins, while on the other end of the betting range you can go all the way up to 50 coins per spin. The theoretical return to player is a bit on the low side, clocking at 95%. 

Features

Your trip back in time to the 1980s could do well with some thrills, otherwise you might find yourself falling asleep. The Wild symbol can spark life into the gameplay at times, replacing any of the other icons to help you form bigger and better winning combos. 

Then again, that’s the only special symbol in this game. 

However, you can also be entertained by the Neon United Reels Feature. What it means is that each spin will start with two identical adjacent reels linked together, and during the spin that unit can expand to three, four or even the whole five reels! 

Conclusion

Retro Neon is a rather modest product released by the developers at Playreels, the title does make it sound promising but overall it fails to deliver the thrills that one would expect. The background music is flat and dull, while the small number of special features can make the gameplay quite boring. 

However, if you do want to experience simple gameplay and symbols designed with neon lights then you definitely should give this a spin.
