Going for an old-school aesthetic of the space-themed slots, aptly named Retro Galaxy is a 5 reels and 3 rows video slot with 243 pay lines.

This release is made by the software developer Half Pixel Studiosin the partnership with a much more well-known iGaming software provider Microgaming.

Theme

The title is at the same time reminding of the older slot releases with a galactic theme and is even a bit similar to the other types of games, such as the famous Space Invaders from the late ‘70s.

Primarily consisting of the purple and blue color palette the transparent slot machine is set in the center of the space that serves as the background. Symbols on the reels consist of royals, Bars all written in a very sharp-looking font, as well as triangular neon icons.

The electronic music echoes in the background as you spin the reels.

Betting Options and Functions

The betting range goes from $0.20 to $20, with doesn’t seem like much until you realize that the maximum jackpot of x7300 brings a potential for a win that counts $146,000!

The return-to-player stands at 96.05%, which falls within an acceptable range and the title has a very high variance, which makes sense, due to the equally high jackpot.

The spin button is centered at the bottom of the reels. On the left, there is an auto spin button that can be set from 5 automatic spins to a 100 of them. Additionally, there are win and loss limits that can be toggled and that, when exceeded, stop the auto spin option.

On the right of the spin button is where you set the height of your bet and in the leftmost and rightmost corners, the balance and bet amount are shown.

Features

Now, when it comes to the features present in this title, first let's start with the standard ones.

Wilds appear on all reels, with the exclusion of the first one and substitute for all symbols except the Scatter.

The Scatter icon, triggers 10, 15, or 20 extra spins, depending on whether 3, 4, or 5 land on the reels. During the extra spins feature if 3 Scatter land again, that will trigger an additional 5 extra spins.

Now, for something more unique, the Rolling Reels feature removes the winning symbols from the reels, allowing the new symbols to appear, creating an opportunity for a bigger number of consecutive wins.

Lastly, the multipliers are in the game, during the base game and extra spins around as well, increasing with each roll. They can grant x1, x2, x3 to x5 of the bet during the regular spins. In the case of the extra spins, they start at x2 going up to x15 of the placed stake.

Our Take

This is undoubtedly a Microgaming's title, as it incorporates the features that are quite regularly found in their releases. While it might seem a bit repetitive, one can argue that if the formula didn't work, they wouldn't stick to it.

And it certainly works in this title. While the high variance and an RTP that, while solid, is certainly not among the most generous out there, might make you break a sweat before you hit any substantial win, the attractively high maximum jackpot is enough to keep you engaged.
