Mahjong is one of the oldest table games in existence, originating from China during the Qing dynasty. It’s a game of skill and chance, and as time went by it spread through all of Asia where it’s still the most popular of its kind, beating out even the perennial favorites poker and blackjack.

With many different variations and ways to play, it’s no wonder it has endured in popularity and captivated players for centuries.

As all things Asian, mahjong has spread to the West eventually where it found a dedicated cult following of players eager to try something new and exotic.

And now developer Zonelock, a company that licenses their game content to third party developers and white label casino platform providers, has reimagined the ancient game yet again as an exciting RNG experience bringing together the world of mahjong with the aesthetics and rules of roulette.

The game is distributed through Microgaming’s Quickfire platform and clients using SoftGamings' platform can also enjoy their games.

The first thing that will catch the punter’s eye when they start the game is the austere background and the soothing music. It’s a game with a very relaxed atmosphere lacking any distractions or loud visual and sound effects.

It’s just the classic green background, the colorful mahjong tiles and the bet matrix where bets are selected.

The tiles in the game…

all bear the traditional Chinese symbols. They are organized in suits and bear the markings of circles, bamboo reeds, Chinese ideograms. There are also the so-called “Honor tiles” that do not have a rank and consist of wind tiles (north, south, east, west) and dragon tiles which symbolize the different kinds of life in the world. Red for animals, green for plants, and blue for spiritual beings.

How to Play

The way the game is played is very reminiscent of roulette in that players choose a tile or a set of tiles to bet on (it’s possible to bet on a single tile, adjacent tiles, quadrants, entire suits, a whole line, and other different combinations that all come with their different odds).

Just like in roulette, it’s possible to play more than one bet in a given round.

Unlike in roulette, the winning tile is chosen by the player from a selection of face-down tiles at the top of the screen.

After the bet is input the winning tile is revealed and if there is a match, a certain amount of winnings is paid out based on the bet size, the number of bets, and the specific odds for a given combination of tiles.

The players can also choose to exchange the tile after placing a bet by choosing another tile from the pile.

If the exchange tile matches the bet the players win if not the round ends.

Different bet amounts are possible, all the way from 0.5 to 10k depending on the settings the casino operator chooses.

Our Take

Mahjong is one of the oldest games in existence and this new take on it is refreshing and engaging. By combining the aesthetics of mahjong with the rules similar to roulette Zonelock has created a very fun RNG experience for anyone looking for something different and new.

We are sure that this game will grace the “Other” section at many online casinos and it’s clear to see why. It’s a well-made offering that brings something new to the table.
