This is one of those slots that you probably should only play when the time is right. New Year just happens to be a very specific celebration. Still, at least Pragmatic Play has done a great job with the execution here, producing a game with plenty of animations, features, and wins. Worth noting that the theme is one about the Chinese New Year, not that there seems to be any difference in the way it is celebrated.

Theme

Fireworks shoot up into the sky and explode into a cacophony of colours filling the sides of the screen with beautiful animations. The symbols are a collection of playing cards and figures from Chinese mythology. Or well, Chinese culture? Nothing too special, and all quite well done and fitting for the slot. As is usual with these games the music is a bit disappointing, and better left on mute for longer playthroughs.

Betting Options and Functions

What awaits you in this slot is the basic five times three reel setup. The 25 paylines all go from left to right, with the usual minimum of three symbols needed to claim a win. Betting is quite easy, all you need to do is select how many coins you want to bet per line and what the value of the coins are. The minimum bet is 0.25 coins per spin.

The prizes range between 5 and 500 times your line bet, which tells of medium variance. There are eight normal symbols with half of them dishing out the lower end of wins, and the rest paying out quite nicely if you manage to get five symbol combos.

Features

The dog works as a wild and also pays out quite handsomely, matching the top prizes of other symbols. The scatter in turns shows up only on three of the reels, and when it does so the payout is your total bet for the round. Luckily, this also launches the free spins. During the free spins, of which you will have five, the three middle reels form into one giant reel and a giant symbol. Each time you hit three more scatters you land three more free spins, with no limits on how many times this can happen.

The second major feature is activated by the money symbol, which is the Chinese lantern. When six of these show up during the same spin the special feature start, with three respins awarded immediately. Each time a new lantern lands the amount of respins is reset to three. All these symbols stay on the screen for the entire duration of the spins. Once there are no more respins all the Chinese lanterns receive money values, which are then added together to award the player handsomely. You can also land a minor or major jackpot this way.

Our Take

The theme is a bit limited, though this doesn’t mean the game isn’t playable outside New Year. All in all the game is entertaining and the special features can award some really special wins. The game is not for everyone, which is why you should give it a go in free mode before depositing money for real spins.
