Incredible Technologies is not a developer we read about too often and reviewing games like this makes us wonder why. Leonidas King of the Spartans is not the most groundbreaking thing in the history nor it will change your perception of slot games – but surely, this 5-reels, 40-paylines game alone makes them deserving of a mention. This game of strength, sacrifice and love for the homeland is just the boost of adrenaline you may need today, so read on and then charge into battle!

Theme

Sparta was a military-oriented Greek polis (a city-state) that was legendary for their warriors' prowess and strategic flawlessness. Ancient world's greatest fighters were bred here (Athens was mostly political/philosophical) and they even managed to defeat King Xerox's vast and mighty Persian army when they tried to invade. Unlike Egypt or Rome, Sparta was not as prominently featured in video slots, despite their popular culture breakthrough with the movie 300. Leonidas – a main protagonist here, same as in the aforementioned movie – was a Spartan king. Himself, his warriors, his wise and beautiful wife Gorgo and some other historical items such as a sword and a helmet comprise the upper-end of symbols in terms of value here. Lower value symbols are A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9, while Gorgo herself works as a scatter symbol.
The design itself would get a strong 7/10. Set against the sweeping overview of ancient Green terrain and a purple sky at dusk with orange clouds drifting, the reels have a fiery edge to them, in that the dominant hue here is orange 0 symbolizing the relentless temper of the Spartan army as well as the sheer hotness of Greece. The musical background is discrete, perhaps even too much – there is a hint of some symphonic/heavy metal music beneath the top layer of ambient music with a bit of ancient chanting, there but it really is almost inaudible. It's an interesting combo and it certainly works well, it may be top 5 of slot soundtracks this reviewer had a chance to review.

Betting Options and Functions

Player's dashboard is located at the bottom of the slot machine. To the left-most side of it, you can set the credit value/coin size, with the minimum being 0.02 and the maximum is 0.25. The amount of minimum coins per line is 0.80 and the maximum is 50. Just below there is the “Pays” button that opens an informative screen detailing all of the symbols' values, special bonuses and all 40 paylines diagram. Further to the right, you can shoose how many credits per spin you'd like to use – 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200. Autospin button lets you adjust the amount of automated spins (the top amount being 100). To the very right is the clearly indicated amount of coins you've won.

Features

There isn't an awful lot in terms of special features and bonus rounds in Leonidas King of the Spartans. Group Leonidas Win occurs when Leonidas symbols land on reels 1 and 2 and occupy them entirely – this is when Leonidas draws his shield, Meanwhile, reels 3 to 5 will continue to spin if Leonidas symbol lands on the reel fully.

Random Leonidas Win occurs when, during a spin, at least six Leonidas symbols land randomly onto the reels.

Extra Spin battle feature commences once the Gorgo symbol lands on reels 3 and 5. This is when another symbol springs into action – the special Spartan Wild which substitutes for all symbols except for the regular Wild and the 2x Wild. During this mode, you can get awarded additional 3, 4 or 5 extra spins if you manage to land any of the corresponding symbols. On reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 and an entire reel of Spartan wilds can get locked for the duration of the entire extra spins mode. Credits symbol will award 5x credits based on the current bet if you happen to hit it at the right time.

During the extra spins, any of the Spartan warriors symbols will prompt an arrow attack. Any Spartans that survive the attack will become a locked Wild in the shape of their famous shields and will remain there for the duration of the extra spin mode.

Our Take

Leonidas King of the Spartans is a fun game, but really all the action is crammed into the Extra Spins mode. Until you reach that – and that won't be that easy and that frequent – you can collect smaller wins and hope for some Group Leonidas Win that is another thing that makes the difference for this slot game.
