The second I opened up the game I was hit by nostalgic feeling about the very first Grand Theft Auto games. You know, back when it was still 2D. Today you would call this retro graphics, which is exactly what it is, and very stylishly so. However, Lazy Bones Freeway also comes with an RTP that seems to be a relic from several decades ago.
Still, after playing the game you do get that feeling that you have found something completely new. Hopefully, Spinmatic too had this feeling when they were making the games, as I certainly wouldn't mind more similar games hitting the markets.
Theme
You’re stuck in a traffic jam, or perhaps you are the traffic jam. In this game, you have the normal five reels with three symbols each, except that the streets work as reels and cars as symbols. What’ll catch your attention first is the music and sound effects, which embody the retro feeling more than graphics (if that’s even possible). Furthermore…
…the game has quite rich background action, even if it is just pedestrians milling about. All in all, the theme is nothing sort of perfect.
Betting Options and Functions
There are ten basic symbols, and a few more with special features. The game comes with five reels, each having the normal three symbols(cars). There are no pay-lines, instead, this slot uses the “ways to pay” system (243 ways to be specific). This means…
…that as long as there’s a minimum of three symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel, it counts as a winning combination. Having more than one matching symbol on the same reel counts as another winning combination.
Betting starts from a quarter of a coin and goes as high as you need. The returns run from two to a hundred times your bet. Variance is high, and as we said the return to player is a bit too low. The interface is perfect for mobile games and works wonderfully on desktops as well. There are options for autoplay(heh), turboplay and other necessary functions.
Features
Given the low basic wins it’s clear that the game needs some special features, and it does have enough of those to spice up things a bit.
The truck works as a stacked wild, taking the entire reel when it shows up. Partnered with other symbols it alone can lead to significant wins. The police car works as a scatter, with a minimum of three needed to start the bonus games. Three, four, and five police cars result in 10, 15 and 20 bonus games.
During the bonus games, each spin comes with a random multiplier. The multiplier ranges between two and five, and it applies to all prizes scored during that round.
Our Take
Spinmatic’s Lazy Bones Freeway has a great theme, with graphics and sound effects that won’t leave anyone wanting.
It’s possible to score big wins, though you do need copious amounts of luck to get all 243 ways to win on a single spin. You absolutely must try this game in demo mode, just to check out the theme.
