Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuthing duo are among the most celebrated characters in all of literature. In Yggdrasil’s latest slot, Holmes and Watson find themselves at a crucial moment of a major case: two locked doors stand between the heroes and the stolen diamonds they seek to reclaim. Find the keys, claim the treasure, and reap the rewards.
Theme
The action takes place within a castle-like home, with locked doors on either side of the reels. Gaming symbols include a rather rakish Holmes, smoking his pipe, a bespectacled Watson who practically oozes respectability, magnifying glasses, and leather-bound books, as well as the four playing card suits. Two keyhole symbols trigger the game’s major features, each carrying an added bonus of 10,000 coins should five of its kind appear on the reels. A diamond also appears on each reel, each in a unique color – collect five of the same color to win one of the game’s five local progressive jackpots. These increase in value (and difficulty) from left to right, with the rightmost spending lots of time in six figure territory. Counters above the reels keep track of player’s gemstone progress, while also updating the value of each jackpot in real time.
Betting Options and Functions
There is no mystery to Holmes and the Stolen Stones regarding betting rules. 20 fixed paylines, with one coin bet per line, provide the structural basis for the game. Coin value is adjustable from 0.01–2.00 for an overall betting range of 0.20–40.00 times the betting currency per spin. Autoplay is available without limit, with optional stops built in for bonus features, wins above a certain size, or changes a player’s overall bankroll above a certain size in either direction. As is typical for Yggdrasil, all player options are neatly organized under the auspices of a purple plus sign on the lower left of the game screen: here is where paytable information, game rules, settings, and sound options can be found. The theoretical return to player is an above-average 96.8%.
Features
The design team at Yggdrasil has delivered delightful features to accompany the action. Three or more of the bonus symbol trigger the the Warehouse bonus feature. Here, players search among crates for missing shards of diamonds and bags of coins, the latter of which pad player’s bankrolls handsomely. The diamond shards are the real story, however, in more ways than one: in addition to forming the heart of this game’s plot, these jackpots are the game’s richest treasure. The bonus feature continues until players reveal a smoke bomb, at which point base play resumes.
Free spins are triggered both by the free spin gaming symbol. 10 free spins are awarded at a time, during which all wins receive a triple multiplier. Best of all, it is during free spins that extra diamond symbols are added to each reel, greatly increasing players’ chances of landing one of the jackpots.
Our Take
Sherlock Holmes has endured in the popular imagination for good reason, and Yggdrasil does their legacy justice in Holmes and the Stolen Stones. This title has everything players hope for and more, thanks to its two bonus features and five available jackpots. All but the highest-bankrolled players are sure to find lots to like here.
