RTG seizes upon the dragon-mania generated by Game of Thrones with Dragon Orb. Though the epic game scale is welcome and the opening animated sequence impresses, this game ultimately disappoints, both in terms of visual design and game features. Nevertheless, with stacked wilds and automatic respins to consider, it’s well worth a closer look.
Theme
Dragon Orb is set in Eastern Asia, where dragons are associated less with fire and mayhem and more with good luck and prosperity. Gaming symbols include a golden dragon statue, blooming lotus, temple, lit candles, ceramic urn, incense, and writing paper. There are no bonus or scatter symbols, but the titular orb acts as wild, expanding to fill the entire reel whenever appears. The reels are situated amidst a magical landscape, where ancient trees, will-o-the-wisps, waterfalls, and an enchanted pool create a mystical atmosphere. Despite a charming animated sequence upon startup, though visual design is remarkably unsophisticated compared to other titles by RTG – these grainy graphics would have seemed low-quality 20 years go, and look almost comically amateurish to modern eyes.
Betting Options and Functions
Ten adjustable paylines provide the basis for this slot’s pay structure, while bet per line is adjustable from 0.01–5.00. This yields an overall bet range of 0.01–50.00 times the betting currency. All paylines pay both left to right and right to left, effectively doubling the active number of paylines for any given spin.
Autoplay is available up to 1000 spins at a time, with many options available to automatically stop play for single wins above a given size, the appearance of bonus features, and/or total changes to the bankroll exceeding a set amount. The ‘Help & Rules’ menu at the right side of the reels launches paytable information. In a nice touch by the design team, there are also three possible speeds at which the reels can spin, according to players’ preference.
Features
Though there is no separate bonus feature available in Dragon Orb, the design does provide players with some lovely surprises to keep things interesting. The dragon orb expanding wild appears on the middle three reels. Whenever one or more dragon orb appears, a wild re-spin is automatically awarded, during which time the expanded wild remains in place. This feature may repeat if additional wilds appear on the reels. In practice, when two adjacent reels are fully stacked, all pay lines are guaranteed to hit with at least three of a kind – this is where the game’s largest prizes can be won.
There are also progressive jackpots are also available, offering further opportunities for outsize wins. RTG’s jackpots can be won on any spin, whether or not a winning combination appears on the reels.
Our Take
RTG has been responsible for some excellent titles over the years. Dragon Orb is not one of them. While the expanding wild free spins are thoroughly enjoyable, there’s just not enough positive material in this game to make up for the lack of other bonus features, messy graphics, and rather incoherent theme.
