Book of Eon, the new slot by Spinmatic, takes matters of love to the grave and back. Free spins with a random expanding symbol, as well as a gamble feature, help make sure that this trip beyond this mortal coil is a profitable one.
Theme
The story is as old as Orpheus and Eurydice: a couple separated by death is tries to reunite despite this most mortal of obstacles. In this case, a grieving husband contacted a witch, who concocted a brew. The reels are set in an eerie graveyard, with a massive mansion rising up in the distance with haunting organ music playing. Gaming symbols include the loving husband and wife, Edward and Matilda, whom death separated and players hope to see reunited, the witch at the heart of the matter, and the foul potion she concocted to move things along; lower-value symbols are provided by the playing card values ace through ten. The titular spell book acts as both wild and scatter: it substitutes for other symbols to form winning combinations, triggers free spins when three or more such symbols appear on the reels.
Betting Options and Functions
As Dante teaches, it’s never wise to descend to the kingdom of the dead without a guide. In this case, the excellent design team at Spinmatic has taken care of all gaming fundamentals. There are ten fixed paylines, each paying from left to right. Bet level is set simply from 0.10–40.00 times the betting currency. Autoplay is available for up to 100 spins, or without limit, though players should exercise caution, as there are no loss or time limits available. Player options, payline information, game rules, and more are available via an expanding menu at the lower left corner of the game screen. The overall theoretical return to player ratio is quite good at 95.50%.
Features
As if coming back from the dead were not special feature enough, the design team has included a free spin feature as this game’s biggest chance for big wins. Free spins are doled out in sets of ten, with one special expanding symbol selected at random before the feature begins. After each free spin, and after wins are paid, the symbol will expand to cover three reel positions if doing so would trigger a win. It can even pay out in non-adjacent positions!
There is also a gamble feature, which can be played up to five times in a row. Players choose between Matilda alive and undead – the choice would seem obvious, but only one holds the key to a double payout… choose poorly, and the entire win is forfeit.
Our Take
Spinmatic’s Book of Eon is well-build and handsomely-designed, but neither level of bonus features and nor base play does much to distinguish itself from the many other options players have today. If Spinmatic doesn’t quite disappoint here, the design team doesn’t exactly wow players either.
