Along with its sister property, The Spa Casino (Formerly known as The Spa Hotel and Casino), this casino is run by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Both casinos were built in the last 15 years. The Spa Casino is in downtown Palm Springs, whereas the Aqua Caliente is in Rancho Mirage. Until this year both had hotel facilities, but the Spa Hotel has been torn down. If you need to have your hotel be attached to the casino, the Aqua Caliente offers a newly constructed hotel, which is not bad for the area. It pales in comparison to almost any casino hotel you would have stayed at in Nevada, but for an Indian owned property in the Coachella desert, it's one of the best. If you don't need that close proximity there are many hotel/resorts in the area that are much better. As for the Aqua Caliente and Spa casinos, I would pass on playing at both locations. Had someone asked my opinion ten years ago I would have given a fairly decent review to both, but at this point, I would strongly advise against playing at either. Since the Aqua Caliente Hotel was built in 2008, both casinos have had a drastic decline in payouts to their customers and constantly show up on the worst slot payout lists. Last year the slot machines at both were listed as the lowest paying machines in the North America. The table games seem to be no better, with their Blackjack, Tri-Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and Roulette games all paying out less than 60% of other casinos. I used to play Blackjack all the time but I no longer play at either casino. Because of the ridiculously low chance of hitting a good payout, especially from the slot machines, the average mood on the casino floor is filled with frustration. This is quite evident as you approach the front doors. Nearly every person leaving the facility voices their disappointment with the games. I often have out of town guests and used to take them to the Spa Casino. If not for this reason I would not visit either casino. Not only have my guests not enjoyed the casino, but over the past five years I have had the worst experiences, at both establishments, in my life. On my last four visits, (two visits to each facility) this is how it went: • I played a total of 22 hours on their slot games, with an average wager, per spin, of $1.50. • During those 22 hours I received a total of 7 free spin bonus rounds. • 5 games gave 15 free spins, 1 gave 20, and 1 gave 8. Payouts for the 7 free spin games were: • Of the 15 free spin slots 1 paid a total of $7.10, 1 paid $3.05, 2 paid $2.50, 1 paid $0.00. • The 20 free spins paid $1.25. • The 8 free spins paid $0.00 (this was at $2.00 per spin) Now, I'm aware it's called gambling for a reason, and I’ve certainly had my share of both great and poor paying nights over the years. Either way, however, I’ve always enjoyed myself. That is no longer the case with either the Spa or the Aqua Caliente. If you are planning a visit to the desert, I would strongly advise avoiding these two casinos. You would likely fair better at one of the Valley’s other casinos, such as Morongo, Spotlight 29 or Augustine. Morongo is located about 10 miles North of Palm Springs just off of the Interstate 10. It boasts one of the biggest gaming floors in the area and a newly built high rise hotel. Spotlight 29 is approx. 15 miles south of Palm Springs, also just off the 10, is one of the best maintained and comfortable casinos in the desert, and boasts an excellent slot payout percentage. Augustine is a smaller casino, tucked away in the southwest corner of the valley, just outside of Indio. Although it's well off the beaten path, it has developed a very loyal following by both catering to local residents and offering some of the best payout percentages in the area. Any of these would be a better choice than either the Aqua Caliente or the Spa Casino.
