Until the 70s when oil was discovered, Ciudad del Carmen, or simply Carmen, was primarily a fishing city. Still today, it’s a great place (and even famous for) the plentiful bounty of seafood. This is a great time to try various seafood dishes made Mexican-style. Try around the waterfront and pier, where there’s several restaurants and food-stalls. The city itself (referred to as ‘the pearl of the Gulf’) has around 155,000 people and is on Carmen Island, which in turn, is in the Laguna de Terminos on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Just back in 2006, Carmen celebrated its 150th anniversary of being a city.

You can find some delicious pre-Hispanic and Caribbean flavours in the local cuisine. Being a large fishing-industry city, this is an excellent time to try various seafood dishes. Try pan de cazon, fried tortilla with flaked dogfish, beans and tomato sauce, or pescado en escabeche, pickled fish. Other regional dishes include tamales colados, queso relleno and pompano en salsa verde. Restaurants nearby include the Picanha’s Grill, with menu items like chicken parmesan and chistorra (Spanish sausage), El Marino with its shellfish platters, and El Vaquero, for steaks, sausage and guacamole. If you really want to fill your belly, there’s Samba Grill, with its meat, soup and salad buffet. Don’t forget to try along the pier, where you can find more restaurants and food stalls, dishing up excellent seafood plates.

Attractions/NightLife

When you want to kick up your heels and go dancing, there’s Tantra, in the Eurohotel, and Plataforma, in the Carmen Fun Centre. To unwind to your favourite cocktails, try the lounge-style environs of Voga. If you head over to Parque Principal Zaragosa on a Thursday or Sunday night you might be able to catch a free concert. It’s located across from the Municipal Palace over by the waterfront. Visit the museum, with its Maya ceramics, located in the Victoriano Nieves Cespedes Hospital Building. If you appreciate architecture, there’s the Puente el Zacatal (Zacatal Bridge), constructed in 1994, one of the longest in Latin America. Other places to visit include the Universidad Autonoma del Carmen and the Iglacia del Virgen del Carmen. If you prefer to spend a day relaxing, try some fishing in the local waters over by the lagoon or gulf.
