From the Maasai, meaning cold water, comes Nairobi, also referred to as the green city in the sun. Nairobi is the largest, most populous and capital city of Kenya and lies between Mombasa and Kampala. In the distance you can see Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. If you’re into safaris and nature reserves, this may be the city for you. Spend additional time shopping, checking out the surplus of museums, strolling through parks and gardens, and of course, hitting up the casinos.

Gaming

The casino has a very modest selection of games but is conveniently located in the hotel lobby, so you needn’t worry about any undue travel if you’re staying there. There are a total of 70 machines, slots and video poker, plus an additional 12 table games. These consist of 1 blackjack, 1 baccarat, 1 Caribbean stud, 3 pai gow and 6 American roulette wheels. The selection may be minimal, but remember, sometimes it just takes one spin on one machine to hit a jackpot. Combined with a few good hands in cards and your favourite number appearing on the wheel, you could still have a pretty good afternoon and walk away with a bit more than you came with.

Hotel/Accommodations

The Inter-Continental Nairobi Hotel has a total of 376 guestrooms broken down into 16 suites, 284 single bed rooms and 76 double bed rooms. Rooms have wireless internet access and satellite tvs with premium channels and guests can look forward to complimentary newspapers. Rooms have views of the pool and park or city-view and amenities include a gym, sauna, a pool and tennis courts. The hotel is near the parliament buildings and next to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. There are also dining facilities on site.

Dining

Choose to dine out on, and in, the Terrace, serving international cuisine. For Italian fare, opt for La Prugna D’oro, open Monday through Saturday noon until 3 and 7 until 10:45. If you’re interested in Indian, there’s Bhandini, open Tuesday through Sunday, 7 pm until 10:45 pm. The Plantation Lobby Café runs 24 hours daily. Walk around town finding local eateries dishing up authentic Kenyan cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

If you’re looking for live music, head on over to the Safari Bar, open daily from 5 until 12:45 am. Grab your favourite cocktail and munch on light snacks. Unwind at the hotel taking advantage of the swimming pool, sauna and steam room and casino or head out into the city. For museums, there’s the Karen Blixen Museum, the Nairobi National Museum and the Nairobi Gallery. If you’re keen on wildlife, there’s the Giraffe Centre, and the Nairobi National Park, with its 400 species of birds, lions and black rhinos and safari walk. Stroll through Uhuru Gardens, the largest memorial park in Kenya, where the first Kenyan flag was raised in independence. Take the kids or a loved one ice skating at Solar Ice Rink. At 15,000 sq ft. it’s the largest of its kind in Africa.
