Leucate is a French commune in the department of Aude in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Locals are referred to as Leucarois. For something interesting, head to the Cave of Fairies, found near the shores of Leucate Lake. The site was excavated in 1909, then again in 1914 and 1919. Unearthed were various potteries, claw pendants flint knives and several skulls. For something a bit more mundane, yet reassuringly peaceful, take leisurely strolls through Leucate Village’s narrow streets or along sandy beaches. La Franqui has 8 km of golden sand, and the waters for ideal for such activities as windsurfing or kitesurfing. When you simply feel like putting your feet up, head over to the casino, pull up a chair and relax to a session of slots and cards.

Gaming

The casino offers a humble selection of classic and video slot machines (75 machines in total), coming in various denominations, beginning as low as one cent and climbing to 1 EUR. Table games in the casino consist of blackjack and French roulette. Table games start at 8:30 pm and go until 2 am weekdays, and 3 am Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays. A good run in blackjack, or perhaps your favourite number coming up in roulette, and you may change your dinner habits from casual dining to fine dining.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site. Across the road from the casino you can find the Relax’otel. The combination hotel-restaurant provides convenient access to both dining and gambling and is close to the sea, providing stunning views as you enjoy your meals. Rooms here come equipped with air conditioning, flat screen televisions and wireless internet access and equal 41 in total. The hotel invites you to plan your next event here and make use of their meeting and seminar rooms and banquet facilities. Please note, your furry travel companions are welcome.

Dining

The casino restaurant is open daily, 365 days a year, serving up the best of southern French cuisine. Dine indoors or on their terrace overlooking the sea. Other restaurants in the area include Le Quai Ouest, Sarl la Calanque and Le Bistrot des Copains. For more options, have hotel or casino staff point you in the direction of nearby venues popular with both locals and tourists so you can sample everything French cuisine has to offer.

Attractions/NightLife

Find all your favourite cocktails in the casino bar, also serving gourmet snacks. Other bars in the area include Les Enfants Terribles (‘Brats’), Bar Pmu du Cercle (for coffees and teas as well), Pilette Patrick, and Le Toit Vert, a wine bar. The area itself is rather quiet. This may be a good time to find some inner quiet time, relaxing, and planning your next steps in your tour of southern France. Spend days strolling the shores, enjoying the panoramic views across the water, or walking through the narrow streets, taking in architecture and soaking up local culture. Those who are more athletically inclined might want to hit the beach, with its over 8 km of golden sand. Windy and choppy, it’s an ideal time to go kitesurfing and windsurfing. Head to the Cave of Fairies on Lac Leucate. Several excavations have unearthed artefacts from various periods, as far back as 2000 BC.
