  • Has anyone (US) tried this at the casinos yet?  They're advertising no reload fees, and some other attractive stuff, so I'm wondering if this is going to work at the casinos.

  • I bought it and it did not work at several casinos I tried. So I just used the loaded funds and paid my cable bill with it.

  • The only card I've had any success with Amex wise was Bluebird.  Otherwise Serve, really seemed picky on what they would let thru.  Even though technically they are both ran on the same platform.  You would think they would run the same, but apparently not.
Yet as of right now, it would seem as if most Amex processing is in a minor hiccup.  I can't get a single transaction to go thru.  So it might be that "time of the year" when processor changes and shut downs are happening.

  • Yes I did yesterday at All Star Slots, it was a no go. Yesterday in fact was the first time I ever put money on the card and I wasn't charged a fee at all, I went to CVS and did the reload. The only benefit to having this card is that your not charged a reload fee, that's about it.

I registered this card months ago and finally decided to try it out yesterday. I basically had $195 on the card and couldn't use it period. I tried to buy something on Ebay and the transaction wouldn't go through, I called CS and they passed me off to someone else, etc. I even tried to send money to someone mind you it was only $5, and it said I exceeded my limit. surprise >:D Which is kind of hard since I have almost $200 on there. This card is more headaches then what it's worth.
  • Honestly I never liked the actual Serve product.  It had too many restrictions and the initial serve card that I got.  Was sent on plain card stock, with no name, no numbers, no nothing, other than it said Serve on it and had an American Express emblem on the back.
It took me getting one of my friends who worked at the gas station to finally run it when I had like $10.00 in there.  To see if it would work.  It did, but the card looked so fishy I threw it in my do not bother using anymore drawer.
Well then I read great things about the Bluebird card that Wal-Mart came out with.  Yet the restriction with Bluebird was you could not have a Serve account and a Bluebird account.  One or the other had to be closed.
So I closed my Serve card and got the Bluebird card.  I have never looked back since, the card itself seems way better setup than the original Serve program ever did.
Honestly with as many times as Amex has dabbled in the prepaid market and failing.  One would think they would finally put together a solid product.  Which they sort of did with the Bluebird product.  No fee to load with my bank debit card, and no fee to load at Wal-Mart.
Like I stated before, I can't use my card currently at online casinos.  Yet when I found that out, I just used it K-Mart and it worked there.  I haven't heard about lots of "restrictions" tho.  Good luck on getting that sorted out.

  • I originally got the card for my 13 year old son to try and teach him some responsibility,  cheesy cheesy . But I should know better he's 13!!Hormones, pimples, and the discovery of girls, hehe. As far as American Express goes, I've used one for my travels and work expenses for the past 10  years and never thought ill of them. But now I'm really put off by my whole experience with that serve card. Bluebird card I will look into I had never heard of it until today tongue The closest walmart is like 27 miles away from my home.  thumbs_down

  • Once you get a Bluebird card, you can go to anywhere that allows you to load an Amex card.  Now granted some places may charge you a fee.  Yet if CVS isn't charging a fee for loading your Amex.  There's a good chance they won't with the Bluebird either.  I can't confirm or deny that, basically because I can't seem to find any solid information other than you can reload your Bluebird with a Vanilla Reload pack.  Which may have a fee.
Just some more information for you.

  • Good to know this information because it saves me the trouble of trying to get one and having it not work. I have enough problems depositing and withdrawing as it is  sad.

  • Thank you, everyone, for your feedback!!  smiley

  • I have a serve card and find that they are extremely particular on what types of transactions they will honor.  This card is really hit or miss.  My kids also have them and have really had problems using them around time at different fast food establishment etc.  I don't know what the problem is but I am thinking about giving up the card because the restrictions on how much you can withdrawal per month is pretty rigid.  I don't think $2500 a month is a very good withdrawal limit.  The cash reload monthly limit is horrible too.  I think until they change increase those types of limits, it might be more advantageous to look into another card.  I always liked American Express but what good is it if you can't get to your money when you need it?

  • Most places don't accept American Express from my experience.

  • Actually, the monthly cash withdrawal limit on the serve card is $2000!  I am having a problem right now because I pay all of my bills in cash and have reached my limit for the month and cannot get any cash from my card until Sunday morning.  This is a really shitty rule.  There should be no limit on the amount of your money that you can have access to.  It is like they are punishing you for withdrawing your own money.  They also are charging a fee every single time you withdrawal cash from an ATM, even though if you have direct deposit every single transaction is suppose to be free.  I am going to tell them to stick their card and take my business elsewhere.  When I called them today to have my limit lifted so I could withdraw some cash they flat out told me that I had to wait until Sunday!  What if I were stuck somewhere and really needed cash?  Its ridiculous and stupid and they should really think about changing their darn rules.

  • I have a re-loadable amex debit card and I use it all the time on casinos that take AMEX- it has never been denied..I don't think it's called Serve though and it is not Bluebird (I had that one and it never worked).

Just went on AMEX online to see what mine is called and they don't even offer it anymore- it is all about "SERVE" now..yeah so I wouldn't do it.

  • out of all the reloadable debit cards and I think I have tried them all, the one I have had the least problems with are Ready Debit- there is a slight delay after loading funds with a Green Dot Money Pak, like 10 minutes sometimes, but it does seem to work ok on all the casino sites I have tried.  Not that you asked ..ha ha

  • Netspend seems the way to go as far as I am concerned.  I have never had a problem depositing anywhere with that card.  The great thing about it is I don't have to even buy a reload pack anymore.  I just take the card to either Winn Dixie or 7-eleven give them the cash and they load my card directly.  No more fooling around with reload packs and the waiting for the funds.  Funds are deposited directly to the card and available immediately!  A lot of stores have started to go that route in order to combat the fraud that is running rampant with the physical reload packs.  Also, I can reload my Account Now card at 7-eleven the same way.  I don't have a ready debit card so I don't know if they can be reloaded directly but anyone using prepaid cards might want to check it out.  It really is a lot easier than fooling around with the reload packs and having to wait for you funds, which depends on where you bought the pack.  Good luck to everyone in the coming year!  WIN BIG my friends!

  • Actually cash withdrawal limits are quite common with prepaid, debit, and credit cards.  It just bums more people out with prepaid cards because there's no physical branch to go into to get more cash than the cards allow.
Even Netspend, Ready Debit, Account Now, Green Dot, etc, etc, have such daily ATM limits.  Which most cards top out at $500 but normally average about $300 per day.  This is to protect you and them from fraud.  In the case someone gets ahold of your card and pin number.  Then goes crazy trying to get cash out.  It's easier to fight fraud that happened at a merchant, than it is trying to recover cash.
I believe if I remember right Netspend was the most generous for daily withdrawal limits.  Yet the other thing I didn't care about them.  Was I got my tax refund on them one year.  They said I could withdrawal $500, but I had to do it in 2 transactions.  Apparently they only allowed $300 worth of cash to be withdrawn at once.  So then they dinged me for 2 ATM transaction fees to boot.
Personally I think the best card hands down in terms of fees.  I know it may be hard to swallow is Green Dot.  Mainly because as long as you can 30 transactions per month or $1,000 loaded.  The only fee you might pay a foreign transaction fee if you do any international purchasing.  Otherwise they had plenty of surcharge free ATMs to spread around the US to use.
The card that came in close second was the Akimbo card.  No monthly or per transaction fee.  The downfall to this card was there isn't a way to get around the ATM fee.  Also I'm finding it hard to find a place to load this card.  Now that Moneypak has gotten way stingy on the ID requirements for loading a Moneypak.  So either have to load this card with money gram, or if I'm a bigger city.  Find a place with Visa Readylink.
For Amex, I really do like Bluebird.  Mainly because if you do have direct deposit, they'll wave your ATM fee at numerous ATMS.  Yet as with most of the card, the limits are pretty strict.  I will agree on the how much cash you can load and how much cash can be spent.
Otherwise, other than that personally I find prepaid cards to be more of a scam than anything.  I realize for some folks prepaid cards are the only way to go, but otherwise if you can find a small town bank.  That beats out any prepaid card any day.

Actually, the monthly cash withdrawal limit on the serve card is $2000!
  • I really did not like Netspend cards after they questioned my transactions to paste and pay. They really seem to watch accounts closely for gambling (IMO).

  • I don't see a lot of casinos that take American Express.

Thanks for the heads-up though, a new way card that can be purchased would be great.

  • well i have a netspend and an amex serve account there are a couple casinos that accept it such as liberty or llincoln i believe and the new mission 2g casino  grande vegas casino accepts it .  the amex card is free to load at 7-11 also and you can pay your bills or use it like western union as i travel for work and send money home it takes a week but it doesnt cost anything to do it  netspend just gets real expensive at 3.95 a load  dont get me wrong i do use it all the time  but i like the ability to talk to someone when there is a question regarding transactions which amex handled right away .  they all have the pluses and minuses .  have not ran into max amount issues  i load 1500.00 every week send off 1300.00 weekly so i dont know about the limits.
