It's June, and every four years, this is the month of one thing and one thing only: football/soccer. 2018 is one such year, with the FIFA World Cup in Russia looming and just about to start. Football fever has struck the globe and even reached Springbok Casino in South Africa – a country that, despite their national team missing out on the tournament, is quite pumped for this huge competition.
As everywhere across the globe, South Africa's natives too have their own ideas who they'd like to win the World Cup and who they think WILL win, despite their preferences. The site created a 2018 Soccer World Cup scrapbook, did a little survey among their players and it turns out that natives see the defending champion Germany as clear favorites to lift the trophy this year. It's also been revealed that Brazil is the preferred team of many and a joint favorite with the Germans, although a lot of folks there took a fancy for teams like Nigeria, who are Africa's biggest hope this year, Spain, who players rank as the third favorite behind Brazil and Germany, Argentina as 4th and England in 5th place.
The site also praises the teams of Iceland and Costa Rica (quarter-finalists of the last World Cup) as potential surprises this year. One certainly original and fun edition was the Everybody Loves Soccer report on some four-legged superstars, African animals that also love playing soccer. For instance, we have cheetahs who are looking up to the local legend, Benni McCarthy (who played at the World Cup in France in 1998), while elephants and lions also took to the field and played some footie.
“You might think elephants are too big and heavy to run around with a football,” said Springbok’s manager, Daniel van Wyck. “But check out our video of sporty elephant calves living at an orphanage in Kenya. After lessons from Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, they’ve got some impressive moves!”
