Spain Reports 10.2% Rise in GGR During First Quarter of 2021

Direccion General de Ordenacion del Juego (DGOJ), gambling regulator of Spain, has released the first quarter of 2021 figures for their gambling market.

The report shows a yearly increase of 10.2% in Spain’s gambling revenue (GGR).

Sports Betting in Slight Decrease

The total gaming gross revenue for this market was EUR 240.1 million, which is an increase of 3.8% over 2020’s final quarter.

Player deposits and withdrawals rose 6.1% and 6.4% respectively over the final quarter of 2020, while the number of new accounts that were registered monthly also grew 7.9% to 422,533 during the same period.

The total monthly average of active gaming accounts was 1.1 million, which is a rise of 22.7% year-on-year.

Sports betting represented a EUR 110.3 million or 45.6% of the quarter’s gross gaming revenue. This is a small decrease of the first quarter of 2020 when sports betting represented 50.4% of GGR. It is still an increase of 6.5% on Q4 in 2020.

The Vertical Breakdown

Casino games accounted for 41.4% of GGR during the first quarter of 2021, totaling EUR 99.5 million which is the annual rise of 28.3% since 2020.

Poker is the second most successful vertical that brought in EUR 25.0 million, up from 3.1% from the previous year, while bingo brought in EUR 3.6 million, down 2.4%.

Prize draws brought in another EUR 1.7 million in GGR, which is slightly down from EUR 1.9 million in Q1 2020.

The marketing spend for the quarter stood at EUR 148.4 million, which represents EUR 71.5 million in advertising, EUR 56 million in promotions, EUR 12.4 million in affiliate marketing and EUR 8.5 million in sponsorship.

In comparison with the previous quarter, marketing spend was down 1.7% after a decrease in spending in all areas except for affiliate marketing, the cost of which increased by 1.2%.

Spain had a total of 80 licensed operators during the first quarter – 51 of them offered casino gaming, 4 offered sports betting, nine offered poker, three offered bingo and two prize draws.

Last Year’s Results

In 2020, Spain’s GGR rose 13.7% to EUR 850.78 million.

2020’s marketing expenditure was EUR 462.12 million, which is up 24.23% compared to 2019.
