Delaware Hits All-Time Sports Betting Record

Back

September saw sports betting revenue in Delaware hit a stunning $16.8m – more than double compared to the previous month ($7.7m). Approximately 340,000 wagers were placed at the three licensed gambling facilities (Delaware Park, Harrington Raceway & Casino, and Dover Downs Hotel & Casino).

Ca. 69% of all the bets were placed at Delaware Park, which saw $11.6m wagered ($2.2m revenue). Following are Dover Downs ($3.3m wagered, $608,000 revenue) and Harrington Raceway ($2m wagered, $378,000 revenue).

The figure, which is an all-time record for Delaware, is expected to keep swelling, seeing as college- and professional basketball are coming up this month, and the NFL season is ongoing.

The NFL Booster

July and August each saw ca. 121,000 wagers placed. The start of the NFL season is seen as the key reason why September witnessed such a drastic revenue surge…

In comparison, New Jersey took $95.6m in sports wagers in August (the first month of sports betting being legal in the state) and Mississippi - $6.3m.

First to Join the Fray

Delaware was the first US state to legalize sports betting. The day it joined the fray (June 5), it took approximately $322,000 in sports bets.

Other states to have legalized sports betting are New Jersey, Nevada, West Virginia, and Mississippi. Albeit Pennsylvania and Rhode Island have followed suit, their respective markets remain to be established.
