European Commission continuously receives complaints
The opening of the Danish online gambling market has encountered yet another delay due to further complaints submitted to the European Commission by local land casino operators and the local slot machine association.
What appears to have triggered the complaints was the government-proposed 20 percent tax, which is much lower than the the 41 percent paid by land gambling licensees. However, the government still believes that it can prevail, and its spokesman recently stated that the proposals were in line with the EU laws and regulations.
In regards to other complaints from the wider industry, they refer to a stipulation in the new law, which proscribes a mandatory requirement that applicants cease all online gambling activity involving Danish players until such time as their licenses are issued, which inspired belief that it gives an unfair head start to selected Danish licensees in the liberalized market.
There are divided thoughts regarding the time the European Commission may take to provide its opinion regarding the affair. Most likely, it will take months, probably exceeding "before this summer" estimate of a part of observers.
