One of Nextgen Gaming’s latest installments is not for the faint of heart, as its name may suggest. Suspenseful and chilly, it is done as homage to the famous proto - slasher of the 60s – Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
Psycho theme
Psycho’s 5 reels are laid out upon water stained shower curtain, reminiscent of the controversial shower murder scene, one of the most legendary shots in cinematic history. Those courageous enough to engage this game noir may find themselves enjoying beautiful visuals and fitting background music. Soundtrack is great and well incorporated, intermingled with occasional sounds of thunder and slashing knives. Opening animation, done in black and white, serves well as an indication of what is to come- a lot of horror spiced fun. That is, if you don’t mind creepy motels and shadowy figures looming over your reels in the background.
Symbols are done noir style, containing images of Marion Crane and , we suppose, Sam Loomis, but it might as well be Norman Bates. There are suspicious looking eyes peeking through the keyholes, some ominous owls and ravens, questionable 100 dollar bills and motel room keychains.
Game features
If you don’t find yourself intimidated by the image of Norman in a drag, then proceed to place your bets for as little as 25 pennies per spin, up to €50. Your winning combinations can occur in 25 paylines. The largest win possible is about 750 times your stake in the base game, 1500 times in the free spins feature, making this game a medium to high variance slot. All wins pay from left to right, except for scatters, which can occur anywhere on the reels. Gamble option is included, and can be activated after any win. It requires that you stake your payout in hopes of doubling it by guessing the color of the cards. When it comes to this feature, it may dry out your credits quickly, but with a bit of luck they can be doubled or even quadrupled.
Wild symbol serves as a substitute for all other symbols except the scatter symbol. They will appear randomly during regular spins, and in case they make or complete a winning combination, the win may be randomly multiplied 2x,3x,4x,5x,10x or 20x.
Free games feature is triggered when you get 3 or more scatter symbols simultaneously. Scatters are represented by the image of a haunted house. Depending on the number of scatters, you may be awarded with as many as 20 free spins. That is, 3 scatters will award 10 free spins, 4 will award 15 free spins, and 5 will get you 20 free spins. This feature is basically what Psycho gameplay is centered around, where Wilds will appear randomly, and wins with Wilds may be multiplied up to 40x. For this monster win you need more than your fair share of luck, but one keeps hoping.
Our take on Psycho
Psycho is well balanced, simple game where all wins will be decent, with a potential for a big win. Paytable should be satisfying for all players. Provided your Lady Luck likes you very much, this game’s outcome may make you gasp, and surprise and shock you – just like Hitchcock intended.
